  1. I will be searching the forums here shortly, but I am semi-stranded on a 1,750 mile road trip with 5 kids under 10, over 500 miles from both my origin and destination. I have a 2001 Suburban I bought with 260,000 miles on it. I'm now pushing 270,000 I made it to a hotel nearby a Chevrolet Dealer, but they don't open for service until Monday. I was cruising at freeway speeds and suddenly the truck engine died and began coasting to a stop. I put the truck in neutral, restarted it, and it fired up and popped back into drive. About 150-200 miles it started happening more frequently. When the engine loses power, the tachometer shows the engine speed dying out, so it is not a total loss of signal from whatever provides the signal to the tachometer. After dying out, the engine will fire back up and idle with minimal extra cranking. The engine starts up and idles well at these times, and I have had to idle it with the family in it and it runs the AC no problem at idle. I have not had the condition pop up at idle. Sometimes, the engine will recover itself and resume accellerating as we are coasting if I feather the pedal. I have an AutoEnginuity scanner and a decent array of tools that I travel with. MIL is not on. I have some history codes for: P0461: Fuel Level Sensor Circuit Range/Performance (I believe this code was never cleared from before I replaced the sending unit previously) P1172: Fuel Transfer pump Flow Insufficient - This one kind of makes me wonder. On the trip, due to having the kids in the car, I have refueled at various levels with the engine running for A/C. Alldata says this code will not set if P0461 is present. P1431: Fuel Level Sensor 2 Circuit performance. The only way I could see the secondary fuel pump effecting drivability, aside form usable fuel, is if the secondary pump failure has caused it to become an excessive current draw. When I bought the truck, the fuel gage was not working, which I traced back to the primary sending unit in the tank. At around 265K miles. I replaced the fuel pump and sending unit assembly at this time with a new AC Delco OEM replacement part. Since that replacement, I have made the same 3,500 round trip road trip without issue about 1 month ago. One difference this time is that the ambient temperature this time is considerably warmer outside, however the coolant and trans temp gages have been riding right at where they normally do. Prior to that last trip as well, I put AC Delco Irridium spark plugs gapped at .045", and a 180F thermostat in the truck. The only other issue that I had was that at one point the EGR became stuck open by a small piece of stray carbon that would cause the truck to not idle. When the stalling symptoms first surfaced on this trip, I put a new AC Delco fuel filter in the truck and replaced the primary fuel pump relay just to rule them out, I would find it odd that a fuel pump would fail at that juncture at 5K miles old, however I am planning to get down to AutoZone and purchase a fuel pressure gage just to check that out during the moments when the problems are being experienced. The old fuel filter didn't seem restricted with a blow-through test. I do know this truck has both a camshaft and crankshaft position sensor, and I have seen a lot of similar symptoms that relate to the failure of one or both of these. I think that's where I'm looking next if the fuel pressure checks out. Am I correct in assuming that the engine would throw a DTC if an ignition coil or coil group was intermittently failing? Any help greatly appreciated! Thanks! Steve 2001 Suburban 2500 8.1L 4x4, 270K Miles
  2. Hi All this is my first time posting here. I hope i got the right area and am doing this right. Anyways, I have read a few post about 'do i buy a truck with 8.1l or a Duramax.' Well my situation is a little different. I have a '05 2500 Suburban with a 496 and 4L85E. My 496 is burning oil like non other and everyone (including 3 dealerships) says to just rebuild/replace motor since I have 176K miles on her. I have always wanted to send my suburban to Eric at Duraburb and get a duramax & Allison put in. But now that I am in a position that I HAVE to get something done, I dont know which direction would be the best overall choice. I am stuck between getting the Duramax put in or getting a Raylar Motor which is bumped up to a 540ci! I have always loved my gas motors and had no issues. But have always thought, well i have a 2500 rig a nicely tuned diesel would be a great way to go. But after finding the Raylar guys and their motor a almost 700 hp 540ci suburban sounds pretty bas ass too! She's my daily driver. We sold the boat a few years ago and are looking to replace it with a 28ft or larger travel trailer or a Tritoon boat. So she still needs to be able to tow. Any personal thoughts on which way to go are welcome! Thanks in advance for any feedback.
  3. So I have a 2004 2500 Suburban with the 8.1L / 4L85e that I want to convert to electronic fans. I have come across conflicting information in my search for the correct fan to install. Anyone have the "right" fan part number?
  4. Oil pressure guage stopped working/reading 0. Needle does not move from 0 when key is turned on. Verified that engine does have good oil pressure. I did have an oil leak problem right around the same time the gauge stopped working. Turned out to be oil cooler lines. How should I go about troubleshooting this?
  5. So I decided to drop some coin on a tune from Blackbear. All I can say is wow!! That really woke up that 8.1! Can actaully smoke the tires now if I wanted to! It's like a whole new truck! Passing is way more fun now LOL! Can't wait to see the improvments in towing this Summer! Now to get my dual exhaust installed....
  6. Decided to edit this post. Instead of "beefing up" performance, I'm gonna start with maintenance. Tune up, just plugs and wires? Also think trans fluid change. Should I have it flushed? The truck has 130k-ish miles on it and not sure what PO did, if anything, to the truck. This is my 2nd year with the truck. I use it mainly for short trips to town and for hauling our 33' TT. It seems to be sluggish on the freeway and decent hills. Goes like a bat-out-of-hell when towing other wise, comapred to my Sierra 1500 it replaced anyway. Should I just stick with the tune up and see how she does or do you recommend anything else I should do to help add more power for the hills and freeway hauling?
  7. Looking at a 2002 Chevy Avy 4 by with the 8.1. It has over 200k miles. Seller says there is a whine in the rear end of the truck. Suposebly everything else works like is should and you would even realize that it has so many miles on it. It looks pretty decent, only a few minor spots of surface rust. The thing is loaded with leather and all options. He is asking $5500. Should I even be considering something which such high miles? What are some things I should look for should I decided to check it out?
  8. Well, after countless hours of searching, calling, texting and emailing I have found my new ride! My 2003 Chevy Avalanche 2500 is getting delivered today! While it's not a "new" truck, it's still new to me! I will be sure to post some pics after I get it home. I've always loved the looks of the Avy and can't wait to actually own one! With 8.1 I'm sure my towing worries will be in the past, at least I hope so anyway! A little worried about MPG but then again it's not gonna be my dd. Hell, my wife will drive it more then me! lol
  9. I would like to hear some real world mpg reports from folks who have or had towed with the 8.1L. I'm seeing anywhere from 4 to 8 mpg from reports on the internet.
  10. Found this site from asking a question on the Woodalls site. Am in the process of my first plug change on my 2002 8.1. It looks as if I will stay with the stock, OEM, plug. A question came up regarding turning off the torque management. Is this a safe process? If so I will have my mechanic do this on my next service. If I get good advice here I will ask him to do so. I don't drive crazy anymore so there won't be any worry about over accelerating. Any ideas on how to increase my fuel economy to over 20 MPG would be appreciated. I was only joking. That is IMPOSSIBLE. Thanks
