  1. John Goreham Contributing Writer, GM-Trucks.com 6-12-2019 We've recently reported on two major investments by General Motors in its American manufacturing plants. We have also recently reported on GM's closing of five North American plants. Why is GM investing in some plants, while closing others? Obviously, GM considers this to be a good business decision, but what is becoming pretty clear is that GM will be building the high-volume trucks it sells in North America and primarily inside the borders of the U.S., while it shifts to imported crossovers for its high-volume family vehicle models. There are two reasons that underly this shift. Before we get to those two reasons, let's list off the newest family model vehicle introductions by General Motors, and look at where GM has shifted work on other family vehicles. First up the newbies. The Encore and Envision are two new Buick models that GM introduced over the past half decade. The Encore is imported from South Korea and Mexico. The Envision is imported from China. Next up, GM introduced the Chevy Trax, which is a clone of the Encore. Also made outside of the U.S. GM then introduced the Chevy Blazer, which it builds in Mexico. Most recently, GM has introduced the new Encore GX and Chevy Trailblazer. There are derivations of the Encore with more space. They are also imported. GM also shifted the manufacturing of its Chevy Equinox and GMC Terrain from Canada to Mexico. These models make up the bulk of GM's non-truck sales volume. There are two main reasons why GM has shifted its family vehicle business away from the U.S and Canada. Cost and import duties. On the cost side, GM's plants are among the most expensive to operate. This is partly due to the United Auto Worker's successful wage and benefit gains over the past half-century. These workers earn a bit more than the non-union workers who build Hondas, Toyotas, and Nissan inside of the U.S. However, they earn dramatically more than the workers in Mexico, China, and other overseas markets. Other reasons that plants inside the U.S. are more costly to operate than plants in China and Mexico are taxes, environmental costs, and safety costs. The same unions represent workers who build GM's trucks in expanding American plants. However, trucks are protected by a 25% import duty, and that tariff had nothing to do with President Trump. It was promoted by President Kennedy as far back as 1962 and was implemented by President Johnson in 1964. The official name of the order signed by Pres. Johnson, and kept in place by every president since (both Democrat and Republican) is Proclamation 3564. Because of this 55-year-old tariff, hundreds of thousands of American workers have jobs building trucks and parts for trucks. The North American Free Trade Agreement allows GM and other truck makers to build trucks in Canada and Mexico if they so choose without paying the import duty, and most have truck manufacturing operations in those countries to some degree. However, a long-running but fading sentiment in America to buy American has helped influence where the plants are located. There is no tariff that protects crossovers in this fashion. America does have small import duties on vehicles from some countries, but none are double-digit duties like the 25% on trucks. This is why GM is shifting its high-volume family vehicle production and jobs to cheaper markets. It is not alone. Ford builds its new EcoSport crossover that replaces the Focus in India. Jeep's Renegade and Fiat's 500X are imported from Italy. The new Jeep Compass crossover is made in Mexico. Interestingly, the Honda CR-V, Nissan Rogue, and many other "foreign brand" top-selling crossovers are built in America. In non-UAW plants. 2. John Goreham Contributing Writer, GM-Trucks.com 5-30-2019 Buick will import its Encore GX starting in 2020 and add it to its already impressive line of crossovers. The Encore GX will slot in between the smaller Encore and the larger Envision model. The Encore GX has about 5 cubic feet more than the Encore and is about 3 cubic feet smaller than the Envision. With this new model, Buick now will have four premium SUVs across three U.S.-market crossover segments; small, compact and midsize. “As we look to the future of Buick, the Encore GX positions us strongly as a consideration for those who want to purchase small or compact SUVs,” said Duncan Aldred, vice president, Global Buick, and GMC. Buick is almost entirely a crossover company now in the U.S. with 90% of sales coming from crossovers. That will only increase when the new Encore GX arrives in early 2020. GM-Trucks.com will bring you more details as they are released.
  3. John Goreham Contributing Writer, GM-Trucks.com 3-19-2019 GM's import brand, Buick, is slashing its prices on the most popular vehicles in the company's lineup. Each of the company's top-selling models are discounted by double-digit percentages. The Encore subcompact crossover makes up about half of Buick's total sales. Buick is now offering discounts of up to $6,276 a whopping 23% of its new-vehicle price. These are 2019 model-year vehicles, not leftovers. The Envision two-row crossover is now being discounted by as much a $7,015. The Enclave is being discounted by a staggering $9,423. Buick is running television advertisements tied to the March madness hoop tourneys to promote the fire sale pricing. There are impressive deals on the Regal and Cascada and also the Lacrosse available. Check out Buick's website for details on the deals being offered through the end of March.
  4. Zane Merva Executive Editor, GM-Trucks.com 6/8/2018 The Buick Encore continues on with only small packaging changes for the 2019 model year. Buick is realigning the Encore's trim levels this year, so many of the previous year's trim packages are no longer available. 5. One vehicle that debuted immediately prior to the show was the 2017 Chevrolet Sonic. Chevys littlest hatch has ditched the large headlights in favor of very Camaro-inspired cues. It seems the era of grafting overly large headlights and grilles onto small cars might be coming to a close. Frankly the smaller, more aggressive headlights and thinner grille suit the Sonic much more. The updates go beyond skin-deep, as the Sonic gets some of the latest GM technology, such as the latest version of the Chevy MyLink infotainment system, featured on the available seven-inch touchscreen, and thats just the tip of the tech iceberg. Theres also available gear such as 4G LTE access with Wi-Fi hotspot, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, rear park assist, and rear view camera. Under the hood, the standard engine continues to be a 1.8-liter inline-4 or the available 1.4-liter turbocharged inline-4, which makes 138 horsepower. Output from either engine is sent to the front wheels through either a 6-speed manual or 6-speed automatic transmission. The RS trim is the one you see above, with menacing black wheels and revised lower front fascia. It makes the Sonic one hot-hatch runabout! Speaking of runabouts, the Buick Encore was another stout, utilitarian vehicle that went under the knife for the 2017 model year. It features sharper headlights, and the move away from the large slatted grille of older Buicks. The new grille still has the Buick "slats" but are thinner and meant to be a more subtle design cue. This new looks has a more sporting appearance, and from the looks of things, less of an emphasis on the two-tone look of the 2012-2016 Encore. The result is a very clean look that clearly positions the Encore for a younger demographic. Inside, the cabin improvements have centered on a rearrangement of the infotainment, climate, and audio controls. The large 8-inch touch screen for Buicks IntelliLink is no longer perched high up on the dash, but is rather now in the center stack, right at the drivers fingertips. As such, redundant controls can be reduced, and the system has a simplistic set of tactile controls similar to that of the new Chevrolet Camaro. The Encore goes on sale in the fall of this year, and will be available with one of five trim levels: Base, Sport Touring, Convenience, Leather, and Premium models. Most trims will be available with the 1.4-liter turbo-four, which will include stop-start technology. The Encore also comes standard with Buicks exclusive QuietTuning technology, and features Bose active noise cancellation. The Encore will also be available with safety tech such as forward collision warning, lane departure warning, rear park assist, and blind spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert. It is a lot of safety tech to pack into a compact SUV, proving that the Encore boasts style and substance! Last up is the GMC Terrain Nightfall Edition-the latest GMC vehicle to receive this treatment. The Nightfall Edition is basically Murdered Out, which is to say, the excessive use of dark colors in place of the typical chrome found on GMCs models. To learn more about this vehicle and others, we spoke to GM Product Manager Jeff Giacobbe. "With this edition," explained Giacobbe, "It plats into GMCs bold styling, Especially the Terrain. One of the most important parts of a Terrain buyers purchase decision is styling. With the 2016 and previous models there has been a fair amount of chrome on that vehicle so we decided to take it in another direction, so for 2017 we decided to take it down a notch with the chrome." According to Giacobbe, this led directly to the decision to offer the Nightfall Edition for the terrain. "With Terrain," explained, "We've never done this black look. We've gotten a lot of positive feedback, so we're excited to get it out on the market and see how it does." According to GMC, the Nightfall Edition models are intended to appeal to more youthful buyers, as opposed to the more mature and well-heeled Denali buyers. The Nightfall Edition will be available on the SLE-2 and SLT trims of the Terrain and available in one of four colors (Onyx Black, Summit White, Graphite Gray, and Crimson Red). But the conversation was not limited to the latest edition of the Terrain, but also potential future special editions, including even a more off-road-oriented version of the Terrain. "One area we've been looking at," continued Giacobbe, "Is what can we do in terms of off-road capability. We explored this with the Acadia All-Terrain Edition. Its got the appearance elements, but also the hardware to back it up with the advanced all-wheel drive system, including the twin-system." "In the compact SUV space," he continued, "You could say Jeep right now is the front runner, they have several products. That's an area that we see that we can excel at. Its on our horizon for us to up our game. The Acadia All Terrain is a great first step, but well explore this for other vehicles." So will we see a Terrain All-Terrain (if that's what they call it)? It sure sounds like it- only time will tell!
  6. George Kennedy Contributor, GM-Trucks.com 3/28/16 The New York International Auto Show plays a unique role in the auto show circuit. When compared to Geneva or Detroit auto shows, NYIAS is not as large and doesnt always have the big-ticket debuts. But for the American market, it is the last major auto show before the 2017 model year vehicles arrive in large numbers, and so it is the last show for automakers to finalize their lineups for the upcoming year. With that in mind, NYIAS is one of the most important shows of the year. One vehicle that debuted immediately prior to the show was the 2017 Chevrolet Sonic. 7. John Goreham Contributing Writer, GM-Trucks.com 3/22/2016 The Buick Encore is the brand's best-selling vehicle. A brand that made its name selling large premium cars is now in the business of selling crossovers with the company's two crossovers accounting for 60% of sales in the U.S. It seems like just yesterday that the 2013 Encore was launched almost as an apology by Buick. However, buyers love the small crossover and GM has tried hard to replicate the vehicle's popularity at Chevy. When the all-new Envision arrives Buick could become a primarily crossover company and interestingly, the majority of those vehicles will not be made in the USA. To keep the Encore fresh, GM is restyling the outside, adding a more-premium interior, and updating the infotainment. Outside the new 2017 Encore gets a new front end and taillights that gives the vehicle more "visual flow" in the words of GM designers. Upscale trims will have LED headlights. The new changes are finished off with a chromed exhaust tip and new 18-inch wheels. “Sporting cues first shown on the award-winning Avenir and Avista concepts, the 2017 Encore embraces Buick’s modern design aesthetic,” said Holt Ware, design director, Buick Exteriors. “The Encore is a crossover known for its presence – the appearance is sleek, muscular and modern.” The new updated interior of the Encore features more brightwork and contrast stitching. The center stack is all-new and has a frame-less eight-inch screen. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility will be included, and Buick’s connectivity includes OnStar 4G LTE with a Wi-Fi hotspot.

  9. Good morning everyone! I'm currently in Cincinnati, Ohio getting ready to drive the entire 2014 Buick line. That includes a significant refresh to the 2014 Regal and 2014 LaCrosse. I'm pretty pumped, because the new refreshed models are seriously nice. From leather wrapped volume knobs in the LaCrosse to an 8-inch LCD screen in the gauge luster in the Regal, these are not your father's Buick. A significant sidebar to all this is that 2014 is the 110th year for Buick. So, starting today at a little after 8am, eastern, check back in and we'll start our day driving the 2014 Buick lineup. Here's a few stock photos to show you the new LaCrosse and Regal to get started. Regal LaCrosse
