  1. John Goreham Contributing Writer, GM-Trucks.com 4-3-2019 The 2019 GMC Terrain has earned a spot on Parents Magazine's 10- Best Family Cars List. The only GM to make the list, the Terrain was noted to be "...small but mighty." Looking for a bit of support validating the Terrain's family-friendliness, the author called upon child-passenger safety technician Abbie Patterson, owner of Super Car Seat Geek. Patterson offered, “(Terrain) offers an ample amount of legroom for many taller drivers even when a forward-facing car seat is installed behind them,” The author also liked the Rear Cross Traffic Alert. Parents Magazine also illustrates well the Terrain's capabilities by explaining what size IKEA torture device (excuse us, we mean) furniture will fit inside.
  2. The recirculation vent on my 2010 GMC Terrain opens on its own after the car is shut off letting in extreme humidity in the car. What position is the recirculation vent supposed to be when the car is off? I live in Florida where the humidity is 100% most of the year. The car feels damp when you open it and I have had damp rid hanging to avoid mold. If the vent is supposed to be open when the Car is off what is all of sudden causing all the humidity? It started this a few weeks ago.
  3. How can you remove the front lower shroud (the black plastic part) on a 2018 Terrain. My grandson ran into something low and dented the front passenger side.
  4. John Goreham Contributing Writer, GM-Trucks.com 10-26-2017 GM-Trucks.com was invited to a quick-drive event including the all-new GMC Terrain SLT this past week. The new Terrain and the Chevy version, the Equinox, are two of GM’s most important vehicles. There is no larger automotive segment in the U.S. market than compact crossovers. Yes, individual truck models (The F-150 and Silverado) outsell the top compact crossover, but more crossovers are sold each month. GM was a little late to see the emerging formula, and the outgoing Equinox and Terrain grew long in the tooth. Nissan’s Rogue, Toyota’s RAV4, and Honda’s CR-V began to outsell the GM twins by huge margins. In response, GM has now closely adopted the size, and specifications of the top sellers. Sales are responding, and the Equinox was coming danger close to third place ahead of the CR-V – until the Equinox plant in Canada went on strike for a month. Our short drive took us over all forms of roads including a short stretch of highway. The drive answered a lot of questions for us, but the Monroney (window sticker) raised new ones. Here’s our take. 2018 GM Terrain AWD SLT – The Drive The new Terrain drives well. The new 2.0-liter turbocharged engine is responsive and plenty powerful to compete with the best engine in the class, Honda’s 1.5-liter turbo introduced 15 months ago. The 2.0-liter is one of two options GMC will sell alongside the volume engine the new 1.5-liter turbo. The other is the new 1.6-liter diesel engine. The optional 2.0-liter turbo adds $1,895 to the cost of the Terrain. In combination with the 9-speed auto, the Terrain felt good in all situations. Handling was tight and steering sharp. The Terrain is also relatively comfortable over bumps. 2018 GM Terrain AWD SLT – Interior and Comfort The interior quality is better than most of the Terrain’s competitors in our opinion. Materials and craftsmanship are above the mainstream class, and below the luxury class. The seat was high-up in the Terrain. By that we mean we felt it was higher up than other crossovers its type. This is a just a “seat of the pants” observation. 2018 GM Terrain AWD SLT – Pricing and Value The hard part for us was the difference in price between the Terrain SLT with the options our tester had and the CR-V AWD Touring, the top-spec Honda. The CR-V is a $35K vehicle with everything. The SLT Terrain we drove was priced at $42,045. $7K is a big delta in this segment and a 20% gap is hard to justify. However, GMC does have other trims that will be priced lower and so too does Chevy. The next item we noticed of concern was fuel costs. The Terrain AWD’s combined fuel economy is 23 MPG with the 2.0-liter engine, and 26 MPG with the 1.5-liter engine. Honda’s CR-V is 29 MPG. The Terrain we drove was rated with Premium, which we feel is crazy for any mainstream vehicle. We did a little more research and found that the diesel Terrain has the same annual fuel costs as the gasoline CR-V. We know from having asked GM that the deisel Terrain's 0-60 MPH time is about 10 seconds. Pretty slow for a modern compact crossover. GMC may well have found a sweet spot just above the level of the mainstream sales leaders in the compact crossover segment. We hope that is the case. 2018 GM Terrain AWD SLT – Safety Safety is a key consideration for compact crossover buyers. Our Terrain tester had added in $1,335 for active safety systems like forward collision prevention and lane keeping assist. The top sellers, RAV4 and Nissan Rogue, now include these systems on all trims at no added cost. Honda’s CR-V includes it on all trims but the base model. We suspect the new Terrain will score high on the IIHS testing. 2018 GM Terrain AWD SLT – Conclusions Without a full week of testing, we can’t say whether the new GMC Terrain AWD SLT is now the best mainstream compact crossover. Based on our short time with the new Terrain, we can say for sure that the look of the Terrain SLT AWD 2.0T is attractive and the perceived quality is competitive with the best. The drive may well be better than the CR-V, due in part to the optional engine. We hope we have the opportunity to do a full test and review soon. The Terrain is an exciting new vehicle in the largest segment and deserves a close look.
  5. I've been looking at the AMP Terrain Grippers as they are a pretty good price for around $800 for a set of 33s and are a really aggressive all terrain tire design. If anyone's running them can you please post pics and reviews on them such as road noise, comfort, and tread life etc...
  6. John Goreham Contributing Writer, GM-Trucks.com 3-16-2018 Despite a production slowdown due to Canadian workers who went on strike recently, the all-new Chevy Equinox and GMC Terrain have been putting up impressive sales numbers in a very important segment. The compact crossover is now the defacto family car in America and has overtaken pickups as the top-selling segment. The old Equinox and Terrain had their charms but were not really built to the same design specs that the Nissan Rogue, Toyota RAV4, and Honda CR-V were. The new designs are spot-on. The changes have brought big sales to GM. Through the first two months of 2018, the Chevy Equinox has earned 50,458 unit sales and the Terrain has found 17,385 buyers. Compare these numbers to the Nissan Rogue's 74,303, the Toyota RAV4's 56,522, and the Honda CR-V's 50,178 and we see Chevy in the third slot overall having passed Honda. And Equinox sales are up 20% over last year at this time. Only Nissan's Rogue has that same growth rate. By comparison, the Ford Escape is down 17% this year so far and has sales of less than 40K units. Jeep's Cherokee rings in at under 30K units year to date with sales about flat.
  7. One vehicle that debuted immediately prior to the show was the 2017 Chevrolet Sonic. Chevys littlest hatch has ditched the large headlights in favor of very Camaro-inspired cues. It seems the era of grafting overly large headlights and grilles onto small cars might be coming to a close. Frankly the smaller, more aggressive headlights and thinner grille suit the Sonic much more. The updates go beyond skin-deep, as the Sonic gets some of the latest GM technology, such as the latest version of the Chevy MyLink infotainment system, featured on the available seven-inch touchscreen, and thats just the tip of the tech iceberg. Theres also available gear such as 4G LTE access with Wi-Fi hotspot, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, rear park assist, and rear view camera. Under the hood, the standard engine continues to be a 1.8-liter inline-4 or the available 1.4-liter turbocharged inline-4, which makes 138 horsepower. Output from either engine is sent to the front wheels through either a 6-speed manual or 6-speed automatic transmission. The RS trim is the one you see above, with menacing black wheels and revised lower front fascia. It makes the Sonic one hot-hatch runabout! Speaking of runabouts, the Buick Encore was another stout, utilitarian vehicle that went under the knife for the 2017 model year. It features sharper headlights, and the move away from the large slatted grille of older Buicks. The new grille still has the Buick "slats" but are thinner and meant to be a more subtle design cue. This new looks has a more sporting appearance, and from the looks of things, less of an emphasis on the two-tone look of the 2012-2016 Encore. The result is a very clean look that clearly positions the Encore for a younger demographic. Inside, the cabin improvements have centered on a rearrangement of the infotainment, climate, and audio controls. The large 8-inch touch screen for Buicks IntelliLink is no longer perched high up on the dash, but is rather now in the center stack, right at the drivers fingertips. As such, redundant controls can be reduced, and the system has a simplistic set of tactile controls similar to that of the new Chevrolet Camaro. The Encore goes on sale in the fall of this year, and will be available with one of five trim levels: Base, Sport Touring, Convenience, Leather, and Premium models. Most trims will be available with the 1.4-liter turbo-four, which will include stop-start technology. The Encore also comes standard with Buicks exclusive QuietTuning technology, and features Bose active noise cancellation. The Encore will also be available with safety tech such as forward collision warning, lane departure warning, rear park assist, and blind spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert. It is a lot of safety tech to pack into a compact SUV, proving that the Encore boasts style and substance! Last up is the GMC Terrain Nightfall Edition-the latest GMC vehicle to receive this treatment. The Nightfall Edition is basically Murdered Out, which is to say, the excessive use of dark colors in place of the typical chrome found on GMCs models. To learn more about this vehicle and others, we spoke to GM Product Manager Jeff Giacobbe. "With this edition," explained Giacobbe, "It plats into GMCs bold styling, Especially the Terrain. One of the most important parts of a Terrain buyers purchase decision is styling. With the 2016 and previous models there has been a fair amount of chrome on that vehicle so we decided to take it in another direction, so for 2017 we decided to take it down a notch with the chrome." According to Giacobbe, this led directly to the decision to offer the Nightfall Edition for the terrain. "With Terrain," explained, "We've never done this black look. We've gotten a lot of positive feedback, so we're excited to get it out on the market and see how it does." According to GMC, the Nightfall Edition models are intended to appeal to more youthful buyers, as opposed to the more mature and well-heeled Denali buyers. The Nightfall Edition will be available on the SLE-2 and SLT trims of the Terrain and available in one of four colors (Onyx Black, Summit White, Graphite Gray, and Crimson Red). But the conversation was not limited to the latest edition of the Terrain, but also potential future special editions, including even a more off-road-oriented version of the Terrain. "One area we've been looking at," continued Giacobbe, "Is what can we do in terms of off-road capability. We explored this with the Acadia All-Terrain Edition. Its got the appearance elements, but also the hardware to back it up with the advanced all-wheel drive system, including the twin-system." "In the compact SUV space," he continued, "You could say Jeep right now is the front runner, they have several products. That's an area that we see that we can excel at. Its on our horizon for us to up our game. The Acadia All Terrain is a great first step, but well explore this for other vehicles." So will we see a Terrain All-Terrain (if that's what they call it)? It sure sounds like it- only time will tell!
  8. The Terrain is GMC's second-leading selling vehicle after the Sierra. The model also has two other positive aspects in the eyes of GM. Half of all Terrain buyers are women, and half of all Terrain buyers are new to the GMC brand. For a brand with a history of selling heavy-duty premium trucks to repeat buyers, a model like Terrain is hugely valuable. Duncan Aldred, vice president of GMC Sales and Marketing said of the new trim, "Terrain continues to attract new and style-conscious customers to GMC. The new Terrain Nightfall Edition adds another great-looking and well-equipped choice for this popular SUV – one that will stand out in a crowd.” The new Nightfall Edition builds upon the new 2016 styling with the following enhancements: -18-inch machine-faced aluminum wheels and gloss black spokes - Charcoal grill with a gloss black surround and accents - Gloss black front and rear fascia accents - Gloss black rear license plate surround trim - Gloss black outside mirrors and black luggage rails. The 2017 Terrain Nightfall Edition will be offered on SLE-2 and SLT models with four exterior color options: Summit White, Onyx Black, Graphite Gray Metallic and Crimson Red Metallic. Look for it to arrive this fall.
  9. We've been waiting to see what GMC had up its sleeve since Chevrolet introduced the 2016 Equinox last month. Since the Equinox and Terrain are pretty much the same vehicle, it was expected the Terrain would get an update this year too.
