Drone With Just A Muffler Replacement

Just put in a 5x8 18” magnaflow on the truck last night. Cut out the factory muffler and put the magnaflow muffler in with a ~5” piece of pipe and clamped it up. Looks pretty good I Just need to shorten the pipe up about an inch so it looks a little more flush. Went fairly smooth... Kinda.

BTW – if you ever do a loan a toll program and you screw up the tool tell them so they don’t loan it out to someone else all busted. Cause they’ll have my luck and won’t find out until 1 AM with a truck torn apart and need to be the work the next morning……

I left all of the stock tailpipe and everything so it looks factory. The problem is I do have a little drone from 1600 – 2k RPM. It’s not bad at all and only if you are accelerating. Cruising its fine. The only problem is that’s about the range I drive in town and with the 6 spd that’s right in its sweet spot. I haven’t really noticed it on the highway at all which is good cause that’s where I spend the majority of my driving.

I’ve only got about 50 miles on the muffler but being it is a magnaflow I know it will need some ‘burn in’ time. Will the drone go away with the burn-in or is there something else I can do to help minimize it?

Thanks,

Joe

Unfortunately no, that drone will be there especially when on the highway. The drone on the Magnaflow's is one of the lesser ones that I have seen, with Corsa being that only one that I know of that will completely eliminate it.

Seen a few people mention putting another smaller muffler inline before the main muffler. A bullet type or smaller inline muffler to change the frequency of the exhaust. I'm sure this would almost have to be a guess and test kind of thing but has anyone tried this to see if there is any truth to this.

I can see it making since by changing the pitch/frequency going into the main muffler it could eliminate or change the point at which it resonates to possible a higher RPM range that is less noticeable on a day to day basis.

Thoughts?!?

I put the 11" 4 x 9 muffler on my truck. No drone, but he did put it back as far as he could towards the rear axle. I keep on thinking this muffler is quiet though.

Its called a resonator. You can put it in before or after the muffler.

You may want to go with a Corsa muffler though...if the drone of a Magnaflow bothers you, you should have probably stayed stock.

Another thing...do you have a tip on it....a lot of the time, just having a large tip can give you more drone.

The Magnaflow doesn't drone at all compared to a Flowmaster.
