1994 Gmc Yukon Gt 2 Door - Tough Decision - Opinions Needed!

New to the forums, but have been lusting after the early to late nineties style GM trucks for some time. Recently, I've come to realize that i would like to finally purchase one, and found this:

http://chautauqua.craigslist.org/cto/1514008654.html

The gist:

94 yukon gt

120k

black w/tan leather

very good overall condition, so it seems

only rust is just below the tailgate, and is only slightly bubbling paint below the lip

Undercarriage has surface rust only, great condition for being a northern truck

I am told I could have the truck for $2600. This seems like a great deal to me. However, I ran a carfax and autocheck report, and they both come back with mileage that was way above what this truck's odometer says now. The carfax says the odometer was reported at 207k in 2005, and the autocheck said 134k in 2001. However, the truck is in such great shape and runs so well that I'm having a hard time believing it has these kind of miles on it. It idles so smooth that you can't tell it's running, and starts up immediately without hesitation. The tranny shifts firm and crisp, downshifts and upshifts as it should and the steering is tight (for this platform, at least). There is no rust on the body besides the minor spot on the tailgate, and undercarriage is in great shape.

The interior could use some work, headliner is in tough shape, rip in passenger leather, stain in carpet, but shows ok for age. The dash under windshield has no cracks. The heat works great on all settings.

KBB puts it around $3600 in good condition, $3200 in fair with 120k. With 220k, the price drops to $3200 good and $2800 fair. For the price, even if it did have that kind of miles, would I be making a grave mistake? I absolutely love the truck, but don't want to toss good money into a bad situation. Is there anyway to tell that the cluster may have been swapped or the digits rolled back? Are there certain areas I can check to help determine the truck's true mileage?

Additionally, the temperature has a hard time coming up when just idling, and only comes up to about 150 160 when driving. Could this be a thermostat or possibly something more serious like the intake gasket?

Overall, I am still very tempted to buy this truck. Given the information above, the question I really need answered is, would you buy it?

talk to the seller and ask him if it's been rebuilt.

if you're looking at it for a daily driver, i'd look elsewhere.. but that looks like a decent little yukon.

i would buy it if that was what i was looking for.. although i would prob talk him down a little. why not get something a little newer?

on a side note, my friend has a 94 z71 silverado in great shape for sale in columbia missouri if anyone is interested.

The current owner says it had around 110k when he purchased it. It is now sitting at 121, at least on the odometer. He is adament it is original mileage, but then again, how could both of these reports be wrong? I just have a hard time believing that the truck can be in the shape it in if it truly did have about a quarter million miles.

Is $2600 an ok price for it if it did have 121k? Is there anywhere I can check on the cluster to see if it's the original one, or other areas of the truck that would show 120k mileage vs 250k miles?

Even though it's only $2600, would I be best suited to walk away? I was under the impression that this a very rare truck, and a pretty good deal (at least according to kbb values). I love the look of these trucks, but I don't want to throw good money in a bad investment.

TBI truck cluster swaps take me all of about 5 minutes and I can get them at the local pick and pull for about $20. See where I am going with this....... Mileage and shape are not dependent on one another. I looked at an extremely clean 1993 GMC Suburban the other day, mint interior and only minor exterior rust at the back of the truck showing 180000 miles on it. If the owner kept the truck clean there is no reason it couldn't be in decent shape. I live in northern Alberta and we are salt and winter land as well. As far as checking the cluster..... as long as the service ID is on it you could check that. However 92-94 used the same guages so really it is meaningless anyhow.

Rarity....... uncommon would be more accurate. My guess is the guages were pulled and swapped for a lower mileage unit, maybe even before the current owner got the truck.

I don't have a problem with older daily drivers ( my driver is my 96 Caprice for personal use anyways) but I wouldn't jump up and down about buying a 16 year old truck. The heating issue sounds like the T stat is stuck open if there are no other strange issues. You wouldn't know that until you bought it .

I would look elsewhere and leave that thing be. The mileage reports aren't wrong and the owner is lying to you...... whether he is knowingly lying is another story. But since you were able to get it's mileage from the past he probably has too.

Just save yourself the hassle and walk away.
