Help With New Sierra

Recommended Posts

Hi guys. I am new to this site and looking for a little info. I am about to order a 2010 Sierra SLT and am trying to decide on whether or not to get the 6.2 instead of the 5.3. My current sierra has an "oil consumption issue" with the 5.3 but other than that it has been rock solid. I was wondering what kind of power increase I'll actually feel and what type of MPG I should expect. How does it feel with the 6 speed? I tried a F150 and it felt like it was constantly looking for the right gear.

On another note...I am leaning towards getting it in white ( I currently have grey). So all the guys with white trucks; what are your thoughts? Would you order white again? Is it easy to keep clean.

Sorry for all the questions but I'm a little excited.

Thanks for any replies.

Go with the 6.2 I cant describe in words how much nicer (power) the 6.2 6 speed is over the 5.3 4 speed. The only downside I would say is running premium fuel (E85 right now is pretty high so I have ben running premium). At first the 6 speed took some time getting used to (had (2) 4 speeds previously). Going back to my 4 speed in my wifes tahoe I would say the 6 speed shifts much smoother and is nicer to drive.

I get about 14 around town and 16 highway (only have 800 miles so far on my 2010 Z71). Also with these around town numbers I have been letting the truck warm up (using the remote start) since it has been so cold out and we have been traveling with ur baby.

For reference

My 2000 5.3 got about 13 around town and 15-16 highway, highest I ever seen was 19 mpg one time.

My 08 2wd Tahoe with the 5.3 gets about 16-18 highway (highest I have seen is 20) and 14-16 around town.

I absolutely LOVE my 6.2/6 speed. It was great from the factory but DAMN did the Blackbear tune help it out even more. You can really feel the difference in power and then you get used to it but that is normally a good thing so you can keep your tires :D

I has around 16 mpg this summer but now its around 14 over the winter.

I think the oil issue is a single occasion but its kinda up to you.

OH and GREY FTW :dunno:

EDIT: to add to what Ryan said

I have 10000 miles on mine and it does kinda suck on E85 and it does take some getting used to to push the Premium button every time but it really aint much more.

The aluminum block warms up MUCH faster in the morning than the old iron blocks.

Thanks for the quick replies guys. Are you saying you have to run premium in the 6.2?

Premium is recommended per the manual (Or E85). Otherwise you might have some spark knock.

Ryan,

To get the 6.2 with the Z71 suspension instead of the max towing pkg, what other changes/additions did you have to make?

6.2 all the way. Haven't driven it, but the 5.3 could us a little more torque in my opinion.

I have a white truck and have owned a white car. I love the color cause it doesn't show stratches easily. My theory with white is there TONS of shades of white. Dirt on it or nit its still white. Problem with it is that if you love the after effects of a clean dark colored truck you'll be disappointed when you wash a white one cause it looks the same, lol. I always have to use a wash mitt for my white car though cause otherwise you cant get that thin film of dirt off (like any vechicle) but with white it seems like its easier to see the dirty spots if you dont use a microfiber wash mitt.

My good friend's Dad works at the Fort Wayne Indiana assembly plant and claims the red and white trucks are painted with the most coats of paint...one because they are typical contractor truck colors and they are painted before the trim package is even decided, and that white and red pigments are the most translucent colors requiring more coats.

I like grey too though it looks clean for a long time too. But always loved white.

Nothing you either have to get the 6.2 with the Z71 suspension OR the 6.2, NHT towing pkg, and I forget what suspension pkg (m60???)

oh and the best part of having a 6.2 with remote start is that the stock exhaust just loud enough to hear when standing at the door of my house and i cant see the lights :dunno:

Thanks. I was hoping to get 18'' wheels instead of 17'' that come with towing package.

On the sierra I think you have to get the all terrain pkg to get 18" wheels

For the chevy you can get them as an option or with the WEA Z71 appearance pkg (not available on the sierra)

I have an 09 5.3L and I am happy with it, but def would like to try out a 6.2L . When I ordered my truck, only had so much cash to spend, and I rathered getting the All Terrain Pkg in place of the bigger motor. As for my truck being White...I LOVE IT! The white and chrome look awesome together and it really stands out. Hides fine swirl marks, and looks good most times. Even now in crappy weather, still looks great! As said, there is a lot of shades of white, so when its clean, its just a crisper white.

Either way, 5.3L or 6.2L best of luck in your search! oh and WHITE TRUCKS FTW!!!
