Hi guys, just recently got interested in HP! and was wondering if im wasting my time with the 4.8. Its a reg cab WT, with so far a GMPP CAI and Magnaflow 2in 2 out. Getting tune by black bear in Feb in Houston TX. A buddy of mine is recommending that i put a American Racing Header kit which is worth more than a G. Is my time and money worth it in the long run? Let me know what you guys think?

Speed is a matter of money.. How much you got dictates how fast you go

The 4.8 is a good motor. If it was my money, a cam and higher stall would be first on the list, coupled with a performance tune to take full advantage. From there it's up to you. The exhaust manifolds already flow pretty well but every little bit helps.

The 4.8 is a very capable motor, BUT is it worth your time? That entirely depends on your goals.

You are going to have people on here tell you thing like the 4.8 loves to twist and I beat this motor or that one with my 4.8. Why that is all true, the fact still remains is you want big hp there is no replacement for displacement.

So what kind of power are you wanting?? And what are you going to be doing with it?

Aaron, I just had my 4.8L LT tuned by Justin on yesterday here in Memphis and the difference is night and day! Whether or not I gained any horsepower, I'm not sure of, but I most definitely am feeling power I never knew the truck had. No more hesitation and the ability to maneuver in and out of traffic makes the tune worth every penny in my opinion. I have a K&N intake and tube & a Magnaflow dual catback exhaust, and Justin tuned accordingly. Considering that your setup sounds like it is very close to what I have, I would highly recommend you get the tune. You will not be disappointed. I got the 89 octane dyno tune. Before the tune, I had been running 87 octance but decided to make a switch to get better performance out of the tune. My D.I.C. has always shown an average of 14.8 mpg/city and is now showing an average of 16.5 mpg/city. That in itself makes the tune worth it for me. No regrets here.

A tune usually nets 20-50 Wheel HP depending how radical you go, and what type of fuel your willing to pay for.

I have a 4.8. I had it tuned for 94 octane...I get better mileage of the 94 than I ever did on the 87, and I actually get enough of a mileage difference that the 94 octane ends up costing me less per month than the 87.

In general...whatever the 5.3 can produce you'll get about 10-20% less...my buddy has a 1200hp beast of a 5.3...so that means with the same parts I'll probably put out about 1000hp...if 1000 ponys isn't enough for you....your driving the wrong vehicle.

You'd still need to tear into the engine to be able to handle a blower. Might as well just do a complete engine rebuild. You can get 100 extra hp without a blower.

I'll settle for 360HP, my buddy jus ordered some American Racing Headers for his 2009 6.2 Sierra, that thing is gonna be fast! he's gettin the black bear tune aswell.
