Need Help With Understanding Clearance And Wheel Backset

Hey all,

 

I am planning on personalizing my truck a bit over the next year, and I am looking at maybe changing the wheels and doing the RC 2" level lift as a start. The wheels I have on it now are the Denali wheels from '08, 18x8 with a +31 offset. The wheels I am wanting are the XD Rockstars in black, to match my Whore Truck grille. :puke: The specific wheel is a, 18X9 with a 5" backset. Apparently my mind is too feeble to reconcile backset versus offset. I am planning on leaving the tires I have on it now until they are toast, then adding a 1.5" BL and some 33x12.50 toyo M/Ts or the like.

 

I would love to increase the stance a bit and be able to come close to filling some fender flares. Just not "in the know" enough about these modern trucks to know if I can do it without clearance issues, stabillitrack isses, and the like. I've actually wrenched for a living in the past, but transitioned on to other things in the early 90's, so most of my knowledge is obsolete! Everything got centerline-spaced wheels back then, and you were good to go..

All I can tell you is negative backspacing will stick your wheels out proud of the fenders, and positive will tuck them in. I have a different truck than you but mine are -12mm and work fine. Sorry, this stuff confuses me a bit as well.

It's beein a while since I did my research but if I remember correctly I believe that backset is the distance from the inside mounting surface to the inside lip. An 18x9 with a 5 inch backset gives you 5 inches to the inside lip and 4 inches to the outside lip. Thats a + offset of 1/2 inch or approx. +12mm.

 

18x9 with 5" backset = 18x9 with +12mm offset
