Oil Additive?

Recommended Posts

Have a 2001 2500 work van with a 5.7 182,000 miles. I use rotella T.. synthetic but im just wondering what additive i can use that actually works.. and will help out. lots of people are swearing by lucas?

I use lucas in all my vehicles. It gives synthetic a backbone so it doesnt turn to water when it gets really hot. Synthetic turns to water visc when run for a while. Tow 5 thousand pounds for 4 hours then check your dipstick. Lucs will help keep the visc.

I would not put any additive in the oil at all. Today's oils (even regular ones) are so much better than before. The only time I would even think about it would be with a fresh rebuilt engine, with a flat tappet lifters and non-roller cam. But in those cases I would make sure I used a oil that had a high moly and zinc additive in it, or oils that have been specifically designed for engine break in. But in your case with a regular engine, maybe a little higher viscosity/weight oil, but that is only if the engine is a little worn out. Hope this helps!

Ok matt, if i did use the lucas.. what kind? or which additive? whats the bottle say.

and Atminf.. why would you not use anything to help?

I guess it is because for me I have seen how good todays oils are first hand. Long story as short as possible. I had a 1995 Z28, put a ATI supercharger on it at about 20Kmiles, and at 114K miles the FMU went bad and then cracked #1 ringlands. When I rebuilt the motor, all 8 walls still had the factory cross hatching on them, and they all mic'ed out at factory specs. So I did not have to go .10, .20 or .30 over, just rehoned the block and put new forged slugs and rocked and rolled. So I have seen how good the oils are and please understand I drove that car like I stole it! Hope this clears up my point. I am not saying the other stuff does not work, but more like "do you really need it?"

gm dosen't recommend any snake oil....the post above was correct that modern oil is already superb, and thats horse shit synthetic dosen't break down that easily, theres a reason high end sports cars like bmws and vettes come with full synthetic right out of the factory...

I towed 5000lbs for 4 hours and my oil pressure dropped 15lbs and was like water. I'm using the GM recommended 5W-30. I'll take my chances with the additive. I have put in my vehicles for the over 4 years and never had a problem. Also took my 15lbs oil pressure in my old ford and brought it to 40. IMO, it works.

The only additive ive heard of that may do what it says is LubroMoly MOS2 additive. It just ups the molybednum which is already in oil. Its for less friction, heat and wear. Personally i wouldnt add anything. Just buy a good oil, which rotella is.

i'm not saying your hurting your motor, i'm saying your hurting your wallet...i could market piss in a bottle as oil additive and say its better then lucas and somebody would buy it...its like the sham wow paradox...take a normal cheap shammy and give it a name and some how its a miracle towel

I buy it because it quiets motors, up oil pressure, and stops the oil from getting thin from long term heat, not because a commercial told me to buy it. My mechanic swears by it and I go by what he says, and so far he's been right on everything he's told me

if the mechanic tells you to drive off a bridge would you do it?.....this could go on and on, i have yet to see any real research that shows snake oil does anything, and oil pressure does go down when the oils warm, 15 psi at idle sounds fine..

15 pounds of oil pressure is low. Let the guy who asked the question decide.

Oh and my plow truck had 10-30 in the middle of winter that lost oil pressure when I ran the piss out of it. Put lucas in, and it kept the oil pressure up the whole time when i plowed. Lower end bearings are worn. There's my evidence.
