2010 Cc Z-71 6.2 Or 5.3?

Hey guys this is I think my first post on these boards, I read a lot of posts, just never post...lol....However I am looking to buy a 2010 CC Z-71 with the 6.2 or 5.3 and can't decide. I have a 2003 X-Cab Z-71 with the 5.3 and I have been happy with it, however when I put 33" BFG Mud Terrains on it, it lost a little bit of power and gas mileage. Thats why I was thinking of going with the 6.2, because I will put 33" on this truck. I am not going to tow a lot, haul maybe a 200-300 lbs in back. I am not one of those looking for Max hp to burn rubber at red lights. Any thoughts??

5.3, intake, exhaust, and a tune.

Those seem to be the combo to get good MPG and run the big tires. I will let you know in a year, since thats how long it will take to finish my projects :dunno:

Putting bigger tires on will lose mpg's even with the 6.2

If it were me I'd go with the 6.2 if I had the option. I gave in and went with the 4.8 in my current truck and still wish I had held out and waited for another "right" truck to come along but with at least a 5.3 and I would have taken a 6.0 if I could have got my hands on one!

I can go either way as far as $ goes...just looking for the best choice. Is the 6.2 as good an engine as the 5.3(5.3 has been around 10 years, so bugs have been worked out) ..gas mileage is about the same and I am not looking to modify the engine

I don't think that real world mileage is the same, from what I hear, the 6.2 gets 1 to 2 MPG lower than the 5.3L in all but ideal conditions, now granted there have been times when I was towing 9000 to 10000 pounds that I wish I had the 6.2L.

But over the life of the vehicle even 1 MPG difference can add up to a lot of money. Especially if gas were to get back up to $4.50 again, remember Hurricane season is right around the corner.

the gas mileage on these new trucks are incredible... when it was stock i was getting over 17mpg on the highway with my 6.2L. this weekend on my round trip to maryland i averaged 14.6 mpg, this is with my heavy 33" ATZs, a 3" BL and speeds in the mid 70 mph range for most if the trip. (and when i accelerate, im not light on the throttle)... my truck has the 6spd w/3.42 rear gear, if you get the 3.73s that'll yeild different results as well.

IMO, if you're even thinking about it id go with the 6.2L. I have a feeling it'll hold its value better as well. not to mention you also get the upgraded 14bolt axle and brakes...

From the needs you just listed and what you are wanting and not wanting to do, a 5.3 would be just fine.

If perception was truly reality, then the 6.0/6.2 would be the most abundant configuration, but it's not.... :dunno:

I'm sure what ever you get, you'll be happy with...

keep in mind you will also be getting a 6 speed transmission in a new CC, that changes the whole ball game. I would say the 5.3 will be more than adequate, but test drive both - comparing a 4 speed vs 6 speed is apples and oranges *2cents*

Hey now... didn't you just tell me that the 6-spd isn't worth upgrading for? :dunno: Just giving you a hard time... but I would be curious to know what you've thought of it w/ the 5.3.

I've had both in a CreCab GM,6.2 more fun.....1 to 2 mpg less city and highway.5.3 even sweeter with the 6sp but won't give you the rush of the 6.2 but thats what the Camaro SS in the Garage is for!

5.3 has plenty of ponies to move big tires, you just have to unlock them...

I am in the same exact boat.. I also have a 2003 5.3L silverado ECSB.. Looking at either a GMC or Chevy CC with a 5.3L or 6.2L... cant decide!!! Also a little worried about the shorter bed.. How many of you find the shorter bed a problem? I do not want to make a 40K mistake! :D

Extended cab FTW!!!! Crew cab is great my old truck was a crew cab but I didnt like the shorter bed. Extended cab still seats people in the back even though its a little more cramped but for me, I love the longer bed but I DONT like the longbox.

I would say go out and test drive both of them. That will give you the best idea of which one you want.

Purely an individual preference. My previous truck was an ext cab, but three growing children and some long distance trips w/ a camper in tow made the decision obvious. Actually, I only changed trucks to get a crew cab. I have rarely noticed the shorter bed, and it's never affected how I use the truck vs the extra ~10" on the ext cab... but I have a 12 ft utility trailer for long stuff. I have very much noticed the added interior room w/ the kids. You'll know it if you need one or the other, otherwise go with what you like and fits your taste/budget.
