rsfoster Posted March 31, 2010 Posted March 31, 2010 I'm thinking of building a removable bicycle rack for the bed of my CCSB Sierra w/out cargo mgmt. I'd like to be able to load up four bicycles and I would rather not use a hitch mount carrier. Anyone have any systems that they use and like for bicycle carrying?
VT_Z71 Posted March 31, 2010 Posted March 31, 2010 It used to be called the Thule XSporter...now its known as the Workman. See this link: http://www.thule.com/en/US/Products/BaseRa...eet/249648.aspx I've had one for years and have been nothing but pleased. I have attachments to carry boats, bikes & skiis. I also use it frequently to carry ladders, tools, wood, and other long items. You can see it in the lower position in my sig pic.
Matt_ Posted March 31, 2010 Posted March 31, 2010 i made a 4 bike fork mount carrier for my truck... im pretty sure i posted a thread on here a while back about it... im on my phone now so if i remember when i get home ill post the link
rsfoster Posted March 31, 2010 Author Posted March 31, 2010 VT Z71, is that a static bolt in mount or does it mount into the stake pockets? Thanks, Matt. I'll do a search as well and maybe I'll be able to run accross it. Ideally I think I would like to make one that I can easily move in and out of the bed depending on what I'm doing.
mfennema Posted March 31, 2010 Posted March 31, 2010 My plan for a bike rack in my truck is to mount a piece of U-channel on the front of the bed using the cargo management holes. Then use the u-channel nuts to attach a piece of metal that i can strap the front wheel to. Might even extend it down so the front wheel sits in a bracket so that the bike can't lean over. Sorry no pictures of it just yet.
Matt_ Posted March 31, 2010 Posted March 31, 2010 yea the one i made was a rectangular section made from 2x4s that fit snugly in the back of the bed. the fork mount bike supports were staggered so you could put 4 bikes side by side. they were mounted to the 2x4s with through bolts from the underside so they could not be taken off with the bikes in place. it was a pretty solid system and did not require and straps/bolts/etc to hold it in place.
terrible1one3 Posted March 31, 2010 Posted March 31, 2010 Bolt these to a piece of wood: http://www.amazon.com/Hollywood-Racks-T970...e/dp/B000QJC5F8 Set the wood in the bed, lock the bikes to it, walah, cheapo bike mount.

My uncle has those Thule racks in his 07 Silverado bed and loves them. He uses his for his kayaks.
VT_Z71 Posted March 31, 2010 Posted March 31, 2010 VT Z71, is that a static bolt in mount or does it mount into the stake pockets? The brackets for this rack system are a static bolt mount to your bed rails. Can be easily removed and/or adjusted if need be. When they are tight, however, the system is pretty well locked in and has the weight capacity to verify.
Sunset_Z28 Posted June 8, 2010 Posted June 8, 2010 I threw together a quick bicycle mount today using some scrap around the shop and a couple fork mounts. I might make it a little more visually appealing or make it so that I can carry more than two bikes at some point but for about 30 minutes of work I'm pretty pleased by how it turned out. I used the existing tailgate latch holes to mount the plate to but found out that it was too flimsy on the outsides with the bikes loaded so I had to run a self tapping screw in on each side (Which I hated doing!) I might up the thickness of the plate on my next one. Here's a couple pics. I have a couple brackets that hold the back wheels down with velcro straps but I didn't notice the bikes moving around too much so i may ditch that idea or add a piece of metal or wood for the back wheels to rest on at some point.
Blue2500CC Posted June 8, 2010 Posted June 8, 2010 Tutter: What did you end up doing for a bike rack? Matt: Nice job! Z28: Great idea. I think the only downside would be you will have trouble sliding other stuff into the bed. I mounted a couple fork mounts to a 2x12. I even ran it with the bikes facing "backwards", and didn't have any issues with the rear wheels wanting to "jump" at all. Chris

Chris Absolutely, I've already had a little mishap with it but luckily it comes out pretty easily.

I have seen that install before, and seems to work pretty good! Chris
