3.73 Vs 4.10 Miliage

Hi,

Before I make a buying mistake,

How will the fuel economy of a 5.3 silverado with 4.10 gearing compare with the fuel economy of one with 3.73 gearing?

Both will be 4wd automatic and 5.3 liter.

I only tow about 5% of the time and will driving mostly highway but mayve 30% city.

Thanks

Its not a big mistake, I had 4.10 with my 4-speed 2003 5.3 and got 15 around town and 19 highway.

3.73 is still a good combo gear for highway and towing. How much weight do you tow? Thats the rear question. If its under 5000 lbs, the 3.73's will do a nice job and still get you decent mileage. :shakehead:

I have 3.73s and I am pretty happy with that gear ratio.

For these two gear ratios, the difference will be minimal... the way you drive will make much more of a difference.

I personally would err towards the 4.10s; slightly better performance, better for towing, can take tire size increases better, and probably a better resale value since a lot of people look for 4.10s.

But if the truck you're looking at is better equipped in other areas and/or a better deal and has 3.73s, i would not let the gear ratio hold you back.

I'll be towing under 5000 lbs only about 5% of the time or less.

The '06 is in better shape with less miliage. I'm leaning toward it just didn't want to get a fuel pig. It has 4.10's and no DOD. Will ther be much difference between it and an'07 with DOD and 3.73. Both are 4x4 and 5.3 liters.

your only looking at about a 250-300 rpm difference in the two gears. me i would go with the 4.10

good luck

I'd go with the one with 4.10's I had 33's on and it did pretty good, decent gas milage, hauled light loads great, but once I started weighing it down or pulled a 22' fully enclosed trailer, I was wishing for 4.56's, which I will be putting in my truck once I do my solid axle swap.

I have an 03 with 4.10s and had an 02 with 3.73s and the only difference I can see in mileage is highway. Mixed driving with lots of city I get between 14-15 and highway I get 18.5 at best holding it to 70mph. My 3.73s could average 20mpg at 70 on a trip. I love my 4.10 overall for towing and the added off the line pulling power when towing.

Does that mean a 3.42 to a 3.73 is about the same noticeable difference as 3.73 to 4.10 as far as performance goes? I Hardly ever tow or load it up so i think i'll go with the 3.73s

It has a lot to do with which truck you like best. I mean we can talk about gear ratio's all day. But I think really with me a buying descion would be more based on, miles, body/paint condition, price, color. Which one you just like best. (Unless maybe I was planning on jacking it up and changing wheel size....then I'd think 4:10 more important issue)
