looking to trade in my 08 grand prix gxp in next spring for a diesel truck, main reason i drive a total of 3hrs to work a day and close to 800km a week and need 4x4 lots of snow. I all ways here how much further a diesel will go on long trips, plus i drive a transport truck for a living and love the sound of the diesel. I want a truck i can run maybe 12-15 years with no big problems i don't pull much but a small boat and a few sleds in the winter, so the truck will be babied most of its life with me.i also know maintense cost wil be much more then a 1500 pick up which is why i will be doing most of the stuff my self. Don't want a newer truck because in my opinion the newer the truck the more chances of things going wrong as it gets older with all the new crap on trucks today .I want to stay with those years.looking at spending $20-$25k canadian with 200k-230k, so out of the two and i know the powerstroke 6.0l has had injestor problems in the past but ford said its been fixed in the 06-07s. so which truck should i go with for long time ownership.

IMO if your looking at long term ownership, start with a new truck. That is the only way to know it's history.

If both trucks are bone stock they will be both good. The first choice for me would be a Chevy/GMC, the D-max and Ally combo have been proven to be both reliable with good HWY mpg. As for the Ford, I know the older 7.3L powerstrokes are pretty good, they may be down on power compared to the D-max but still a strong motor. The newer 6L range powerstrokes I have seen are hit or miss. Some have their problems while other have been very good. I would just say that since GM was able to stick to one Diesel engine platform for the long term they were able to "fix" all the issues out. Hope this helps.

We have purchased D-max for work vehicles for the last 8 years. We currently have a 02 with a little over 200,000 miles on and have had no issues with the drivetrain at all. With all the idling it does in the winter it has averaged about 13 mph when we divide the miles by engine hours so it has run more than the average motor would. Mileage has been a pleasant surprise also, we consistantly average about 16 mpg and thats with about 2200 lbs of gear constantly in the bed. WE have an 05 and a couple 06s that have been treated about the same with no issues either. Overall we have been very happy.

Why wait till next spring? Fly down here to Florida and drive this one home...

Dealers here will always knock several thousand off their Advertised or Asking price - Who knows, by next spring used truck prices may be even higher. New Truck Sales by everyone are way down this year - so there is a growing shortage of really clean, low mileage used trucks and the demand for them goes up - as potential buyers are shocked at the prices of the 2010/11's...

Low mileage diesels are hard to find..

I will say the 6.0L's are nothing special in the power department, I haven't drove a duramax, but my buddies dad 04 PS has really bad turbo lag. But, I would say all in all, it's a toss up, what ever you prefer, but a straight piped powerstroke sounds very nice.

GMT-800 Dmax is the way to go, by far the best dirtymaxs they have made...newer ones are being dogged by emissions too much...power stroke's track record of reliability is not very good....if you want to step out of GM get a cummins...amazing motors also..minus the fact that they are coupled to a dodge trans lol

I have not heard of too many issues with the 7.3L powerstroke, only the 6L varients? I know my buddies 7.3L while not as "fast" as the D-max's is a darn good truck. Just my 2 cents.

All I can say as far as a Ford they don't call the early build 6.0 diesel the "powerjoke"

for nothing also note that the tranny that comes along with it is called the

"torque s hit" transmission.............Use caution!

if your doing mostly highway driving then the Duramax will definitely shine in the MPG department, heck it will shine in the MPG department for city driving too as compared to the 6.0. I would expect very few problems at all with the 6.0, however I myself prefer the comforts and power of the Duramax over that of the gasser. Maintenance costs are really not all that much more expensive when you sit down and think about it. If you can afford it, definitely go the route of the Duramax.

my first choice is the duramax i ve all ways owned gm with great luck, the only problem is here in ontairo i don't see that many for sale on auto trader compared to 07 f250s.if i bought a f250 it would be an 07 and no older then the 06 because from what i hear ford fixed the injector problems in 06. .so i will see if i can find a 06-07 duramax and if not then its powerstroke, and would not own a dodge i can't afford to spend money on transmission all the time and i hear they have big electrical problems also. one more thing is i have to stay in canada because my 08 grand prix gxp must be a trade in because come next spring i will still owe 18k but it just sits in my dads garage and my 96 gmc sierra dosen't have 4x4 it sucks in the snow.
