Oil Usagein An 8.1

Hi, I'm new to this forum, hope some one can help. I picked up a 2002 GMC 2500HD with an 8.1 and Allison trans, it uses 1 quart of oil every 1000 miles give or take a couple hundred miles. What I've tried so far, 5W-30 Synthetic, 10W-30 Synthetic, 10W-40 Mineral, 180*F thermostat. Someone suggested 15W-40 Mobil 1, HELP I know this is a common problem GM says this amount of useage is ok!! It sure seams like alot to me. Again HELP!

the company i work for has about half-dozen trucks with the 8.1 in them, our fleet manager/mechanic once told me they all burn oil like that. he said one truck we got burns a quart every fill up LOL....

my 04 yukon with the 8.1 doesnt seem really to use much in 3000 miles im less than a 1/2 qaurt, there was a guy in here who told me the early 8.1,s 01-03 were the worst for oil consumption, not sure what they changed. but the 180 is definitly supposed to help.

i use rotella t full synthetic,theres lots of people who swear by it.

I have read about oil consumption in the 8.1's. That can not be a good thing. I would think it would poison the cats after a while, especially if you used an oil high in zinc and phosporous.

 

Not sure on this but wasn't there a redesigned PCV valve that was used with a smaller orific to help reduce engine oil useage?

Thanks for the help I've ordered the intake bolts, hope to have them in this weekend. This engine has no PCV maybe that is part of the problem. Thanks again.

just recently ive been driving mine harder and it seems like if you drive an 8100 like grandpa they dont burn any but just recently since i started giving it sommore go it seems to be burning oil

I have tried all different oils and i havent noticed much difference in mine. I burn about a quart every 1000 miles also but i haul a 3 car hauler weighing 18,000lbs all day every day so im sure it doesnt help but im at 185,000 miles on the clock now and no issues thus far, but i also do seafoam treatments now religiously. Goodluck man, I wouldnt worry too much!!
