Rattle in Steering Shaft?

Recommended Posts

I have 2002 Silverado that has develped a rattle/ clunk in the steering shaft under cornering.  The dealer had fixed it by lubing the intermediate shaft, per a service bulletin.  The problem went away, but after about 2500 miles it came back.  So I brought it back in to have it looked at again. There solution was to lube it again.  When I questioned the service manager about it he said that was the only "band-aid" for the problem and since there is no safety issue they can not replace the parts.  He told me it makes the noise because of play in the spines of the shaft. To me there has to be something else done than just lubing every 2500 miles.

I am wondering if anyone else has had this problem and gotten the dealer to do a better fix?  I have 22,000 miles on the truck and don't want to be dealing with fixing this problem outside of warranty. :D

Firetiger,  Is this something that the dealer will do under warranty or something one would have to do themselves or pay to have done?  Also where did you hear about the solution?  Thanks for the insight so far!

I believe the dealer should take care of this under warranty.  This fix should replace the intermediate steering shaft and shaft lube TSB's.

I found this info on another gm forum.  Personally I have not had this serviced as of yet.  But, it's starting to get on my nerves so I may stop by the dealer one of these days so I can see that friendly blank look once again.  :D

If the vehicle is still under either the manufacturers warranty, or the extended one they will fix it. otherwise you will have to pay for it or do it yourself. IT cant be that big of a deal, the dealer did mine in about 1 1/2 hours. 5k and working great.

FYI, that's the old TSB.  There is a bearing change that is supposed to fix the problem now.

Does anyone have the TSB for the new bearing fix?  Redapple?  I want to have something to refer to when I have to go deal with the service people again. Thanks

I didn't know the TSB number, I just told the dealer to fix it. I do have the extended waranty, so he did the intermediate shaft, the bearing, and the grease. That was back in July, and it is still working great. I will try to get the TSB for you though. Give me a day or so.

Yeah......The TSB that my dealer did had them changing out the entire rack.

If I recall correctly it was described in the TSB as "Steering Gear Whistle"

Take your truck into the dealer....tell em there is a whistle sound coming from your steering gear.  If they don't find the TSB don't worry...I had to provide a copy of the tsb to get em to fix mine too.

If your dealer cannot find the TSB...email me...I will get you a copy!

Here is the one for the steering wheel clunck. I can't find the one for the lower bearing replacement however.

Good Luck,

Thanks Redapple, but I have had the intermediate shaft greased as per the TSB but it only cures it for a few thousand miles.  What I am still trying to find out is what the TSB is for the bearing replacement and if that will be the right fix.  Anyone have the TSB number for that?

I can't find a TSB for that. Looked all thriugh the Alldata database. What I did fine is this:

A new stub shaft bearing kit 26099860 that has been released to address this issue. The kit contains a bearing, a packet of lubricant and instructions.

The kit runs $12.02 from GmPartsDirect.com. The J-tool required to perform the job mentioned must be a fork or slide hammer. Tool # J-45798 cost unknown.
