My '13 5.3 uses no oil but our '11 Equinox 2.4 uses 2+ quarts in 5,000 miles. Hammers like a diesel at idle...BAD rod knock type sound on hot start. (No knock on cold start). Have had it "repaired" at dealer four times (timing chains, tensioners, cam actuators, water pump chain, etc). Now at 48,000 miles (religiously maintained) doing oil consumption test. Next step is rings/pistons or short block replacement. Thankfully still under warranty. So it's not just trucks. Search the 'net. Almost al manufacturers have these problems. I'm not sure anything else would be any better. Still a GM fan but my loyalty is being tested.

Yeah, you can't win these days. Everything from toasters to trucks is a POS lately. I'm pretty tired of it all ... :nonod:

I was seriously looking at a 2015 or 2016 5.3L Silverado CC, especially since I have $3.5K on my GM Card. All of these issues with AFM has me seriously reconsidering my decision. I'm not a fan of Ram, so I may go browse the F150 forums. Hopefully the 5.0 does not have any major issues.

It's been a while since my last post. I am back just to say that when I had my last oil change from the dealer, the service manager told me that next time, bring it back when the oil life monitor is at 25-30% I asked him why? He did not go into a lot of detail but, basically said that this way the oil still has some "life" to it and won't be as dirty. Better for the engine he adds! Go figure.

Sounds to me that they are thinking having the oil changed sooner will help illiminate the oil consumption issues.

What kind of consumption did you have for this latest OCI?

With all these afm issues, I have decided to go gas 2500hd next time. No afm to worry about on those.

They should make the 3.6twin turbo an option on the trucks, should give them the mpg needed to ditch afm. Ford does not use afm.

Was discussing the differences between the 2500HD 6.0 and the 1500 with the 6.2L with some folks. While the 6.2L is indeed impressive on a couple of levels, it also calls for premium fuel, and is not flex fuel. Did some quick figuring based on pricing in my area. E15 is going for $2.08. Premium is averaging $3.15. My 2015 2500 has been doing about 14 mpg for all miles, and 17 highway mpg on road trips using E15 and E10 primarily. At current pricing, that equates to about 12 1/4 cents per mile on the highway. The 6.2L in a 1500 using premium would have to get between 25 and 26 mpg highway just to break even on fuel cost per mile. We know that is not going to be realistic unless one always has a tail wind and down grade. So my 2500 6.0 can haul considerably more, tow considerably more, and actually is less expensive on a cost per mile basis than a 6.2L 1500. I have no regrets getting the 2500. And none of that AFM nonsense for a little icing on the cake.

What year range does the oil consumption issue cover and what engine or engines? Any of these engines affected come without AFM?

From my reading, it appears that if the valve cover is swapped out early on to the new design with the baffle, then the damage would be less severe to major engine components. Is this correct?

Thanks in advance.

Seems to be from '07 right on up. '09 seems to be the worst of all of them from what I've seen, but that just might have been a coincidence. I have no concrete evidence that this is the case - just seems that way to me. Not just trucks either. I've got a buddy that had a 6-cylinder Camaro that used oil like crazy. GM kept giving him the run around until the engine decided to ventilate itself by sending a rod out the side of the block. He got a new engine after that, and sold it.

Mine was fine up until about 50k miles. It only burns at high RPM - for example if I'm towing, and let the cruise control tach the thing up to 5k on every hill, it will go through oil at an alarming rate. If I keep the revs mellow, I can go 5k miles or more on a quart of Amsoil.

From about 20k miles onward I started to notice slight puffs of blue out both pipes when using the remote start. I haven't seen that happen since I installed a catch can last year.

21st century manufacturing ... :nonod:

07 NBS 5.3 58k miles using 1-2 quarts between changes.

I was so excited to find a low mileage Silverado from an elderly gentlemen but after owning the truck for a year, I am soooo disappointed with the oil consumption issue. I have a few questions I hope someone can confirm for me before I start throwing money at this.

1. If I get a tune and disable AFM will that in itself correct the oil consumption issue or will I still have to change out the valve cover?

2. From the images of the new valve cover online, I can only see a difference in the baffle on the underside of the cover. Is there any visual difference on the outside of the new valve cover such that I can confirm whether it has or has not already been changed out?

Thanks

to semi answer your questions;

I installed the range afm delete device at roughly 60k miles

I installed a cheapo catchcan on the pcv line at the same time

I get about 2-3 ozs of oil and crud at each oil change

amsoil since new, 1k miles,

and am regular with injector cleaner

please note that this engine did not use oil EVER or now

I've done a lot of hilly towing the past 2 years, currently at 92k+

I hope this info will help,

Tim
