TxDoc Posted November 4, 2002 Posted November 4, 2002 I had heard this, but not encountered it. Now I am seeing it. How long ago did they do this? Not a big deal, I have both, but don't know when to expect SAEand when to expect metric. Thanks
Bob G. Posted November 4, 2002 Posted November 4, 2002 My 88 GMC had both metric and SAE and my 78 Chevy had all SAE as I recall. Bob G.
chevy4x4trucks Posted November 4, 2002 Posted November 4, 2002 It's annoying isn't it. I wish they'd stick w/ one or the other. Preferably metric, but it gets annoying having to sift through two different socket sets. Although I have noticed over the years it has become more and more metric.
Tucson_02Silverado Posted November 4, 2002 Posted November 4, 2002 It's been a long while, so I don't remember anything on the 73 Cadillac There was both on my 77 TransAM, I'd say less than 5% metric. On my 83 Caprice and 84 TransAm, it seemed to be an annoying 40% metric. On my 88 TransAM GTA 95%+ on body, annoying 50% on engine.
MarkD Posted November 4, 2002 Posted November 4, 2002 Almost everything on my 1997 Camaro was metric.
BDBWTE Posted November 4, 2002 Posted November 4, 2002 The whole metric thing pissed me off...I had a 77 Chev all SAE...then to the 1990 Cherolet Silverado 1/2 ton with metric on her all over....followed by the 99 and 02 which have equal if not more metric......ahh GM what were you thinking????
RyanbabZ71 Posted November 4, 2002 Posted November 4, 2002 my dads 92 S-10 has both. We changed out his shocks last friday and had to use std and metric Luckily i have a nice craftsman mechanics set with both std and metric
sincityZ71 Posted November 4, 2002 Posted November 4, 2002 Yeah I have noticed that, but I have gotten by using all metric tools, which is good cause that is all I have. I wish they would just stick with the metric, though it seems to me that everything on my truck so far is metric. :thumb:
Redapple Posted November 5, 2002 Posted November 5, 2002 It all depends on who manufactured the part. GM has so many different vendos for the same part, you could get one that has SAE, and the same part from another vendor that is Metric (ISO). It sucks. Bill
ClipperSkipper Posted November 5, 2002 Posted November 5, 2002 Ever since we started subbing out work and production to Canada and Mexico and the USA blew off the ISA standard in the 70's. It really is a simple method of 10's and 100's. That's NAFTA, your soaking in it. Have a great one!
