is voltmeter used in charging circuit?

Does the alternator need the instrument cluster to be hooked up/plugged in (through the voltmeter) in order to charge the battery in my 1990 truck?

Thanks

Voltmeters only measure difference in potential energy. As said above, no need to have one in place. Even modern day ammeters are not needed to allow battery to charge. Old style ammeters are different, mid 70's Dodges had output from alternator going to back of dash, not a smart time to leave your watch on your wrist while trying to change dash light on a 76 Dart.

Some of those alternators needed the Amp Indicator Bulb to excite the alternator before it would start charging. They need the resistance from the bulb or a resistor equal to the resistance of the bulb.
