Transmission Pan

Yeah, no sweat on the rear diff, but the coolant is becoming a problem. I don't want to dump the coolant in the gutter. 'round here, in SoCal, I bet it's now a big fine. I figure I'll spend a few bucks with my wife's friend and let him do it. Hoses, while he's at it, too.

An Update on my Transmission Pan;

I did go with an aluminum deep transmission pan from Mag-Hytec for my truck $260. And I'm changing the transmission fluid to full synthetic "Amsoil Multivehicle Transmission Fluid". The Mag-Hytec Pan is made top notch in every aspect and the drain plug in the bottom is the best thing there is for changing the fluid. I did have a problem when mounting the pan in that the ribs on the side of the pan prevented me from re-mounting the bracket that holds the transmission cable. I had to take a grinder and modify the bracket but then it bolted up. Don't get me wrong because as I said the pan is made top notch, but (always a but!) I do have a major with the pan and I will explain the problem now.

I purchased this pan for the extra capitity which is claimed to be and extra 3.3 quarts of fluid above the stock amount which I thought would help with cooling of the transmission and also prolong the life of the transmission. The factory service manual that I have say's that for a normal drain of the pan on the 4L60E transmission it will take 5 quarts of fluid to refill the transmission so if you add the extra 3.3 quarts Mag-Hytec claims for their pan it would be 8.3 quarts for a refill (right??)

When I installed the pan I had the truck's front wheels up on ramps to give me more room the install went pretty good except for having to modify the bracket. When I refilled the transmission I put in 6 quarts, started the truck and went thru the gears to circulate the fluid and checked it again expecting it to be low (should take 8.3 by Mag-Hytec's claim) I ended up having to take a pump I have and pump out 1/2 quart because I was overfull. I thought maybe it was because when I drained the transmission I had the truck up on ramps and some of the fluid didn't drain out so just went with the 5.5 quarts since it was on the full mark on the dipstick. This was last September, since I want to go with full synthetic and only got a partial change I decided to change the fluid again this week to get more synthetic into the system. I did not change the filter this time since I did it last time and didn't have many miles on it, next time I will change the filter again. I left the truck down on the garage floor this time and used a catch pan to catch the fluid (again the drain plug works great) the transmission was hot and I let it drain for about an hour. I measured what came out and again only had 5.5 quarts of fluid!! That is also what it took to refill the transmission. My problem is I paid high dollar for a deep dish pan expecting the extra 3.3 quart capacity, again the factory book calls for 5 quarts with the stock pan when draining so I should be able to use 8.3 now but instead only got and extra 1/2 quart capacity. I'm very disappointed with this and have emailed Mag-Hytec about this but as of yet haven't gotten a reply.

They did put a flat, shallow pan on some trans. Guess that's what Mag-hytec is comparing to. Still your new pan should transfer heat slightly better

As for recycling coolant. The Advance Auto Stores around here now take used engine coolant along with used oil and oil filters.

I put a Derale deep pan with those "cooling tubes" in it. It holds several extra quarts than the stock pan. I did not really see any lower temps, but it took a while longer to heat up, and then it just stayed there. So I am happy. I have a humvee trans cooler that I might hook up one of these days, but my tranny temp is very stable so right now, I am just being lazy.
