3.08 vs 3.43

get 3.42 gears. Coming from a 2002 z71 5.3 4 speed with 3.73 gears to a 2011 ltz 5.3 6 speed with 3:08, my 2011 feels underpowered. Doing highway speeds the truck doesnt even like to stay in 6th with any kind of wind not to mention a slight incline. Just waiting to haul the 3.08s out so i can get the 3.42 gears i just bought put it...

To all the people thinking 3.43. Take the extra step to 3.73. If you have afm and your on the highway you will go to 4 cup mode more often so you'll gain back the slight mileage you lose. Going from 3.08 to 3.42 just doesn't make sense to me when a 3.73 or 4.10 would cost the same

That's possible? Silly, but very possible

It's true, but if someone is looking to swap gears after market, I'd go 3.73. The steepest gear for a 5.3/6-spd from GM is 3.42, but it seems to be a good balance of gear/economy for the motor.

my wife's Tahoe has that combo, and it works good for us. It even pulls better than my truck does.

Cant get the 3.73 anymore without the 6.2 can you?

Sad but true. 3:42 is the lowest (numerically highest) gears you can get with the 5.3. The 3:73's are only available with the 6.2....and then only if you get the NHT package....otherwise you're stuck with 3:42 there as well. 4:10's aren't even available in a 1500 any more.

when the dealer quoted me $3200 for front and rear gears alone and i got new take out oem 3.42's for $100. saving $3100 made alot of sense to me. The average commuter doesnt benefit from that low of gearing

That makes sense.

Seems your stuck on the 342 anyway. 342 still is much, much better than the 308 so you'll be happy! Have fun!
