Black Driveshaft in 2013 All Terrain?

I'm looking at purchasing a 2013 GMC Sierra 1500 All Terrain SLT Crewcab and the driveshaft is black - every other driveshaft I've seen/owned in a GMT-900 crew cab was aluminum and was not painted (probably clear coated?) but definitely metal colored.

 

What is this black driveshaft? Is it something special because of the All Terrain package? Something they did because the truck was built for GM as an autoshow vehicle?

 

The truck has the 3.08 rear end if that matters.

My 2013 Suburban 4X4 has black drive shafts.

My 2010 GMC Sierra SLT "All Terrain" has aluminum drive shaft, I have the 3.42 / G80 rear end, my is also an extended cab.

 

My 1995 Chevrolet Silverado K1500 has a black drive shaft which it also has the 3.42 rear end.

 

Not sure what the difference is in them?

You'd think an all-terrain would have a 3.42 or something like that. Not to bash the 3.08 though. Love mine, and btw my drive shaft is unpainted aluminum too.

Yes, I was surprised that it's the 3.08 on the All Terrain

 

I currently have a 2013 Sierra 1500 SLT Crew with the Z60 suspension and the 3.42 that I'm not happy with and would be trading on the All Terrain. Both trucks were built within a week of each other so the different driveshafts puzzle me.

 

Is the back driveshaft a steel shaft? Is there a negative? I'm on the fence about this deal....

i have 3.08 on my Z71. Same options as the sierra "AT" if im not mistaken. No complaints.

 

On to the driveshaft. Mine has a nice rust coating.. maybe i should take it to the dealer and complain? less than a year old, just over 10K miles.

The black is likely some sort of reinforced composite. GM has used them for ages. As for the rusty metal shaft, the steel ones are not treated, nothing you can do as it isn't a defect.

with any luck it would be a high end Kevlar composite, did you try a magnet?

Can I ask why you are not happy with your current truck? My friends compliment on how smooth the z60 is on the road compared to their Rams and Fords. Not really sure if you could tell driving a 3.42 vs. 3.08.

 

If off road is your thing, the All Terrain pack is a more sporty look and feel. Best of luck.

My 2006 Z71 had a silver driveshaft, no rust either.

I have a 2 piece steel driveahaft. There is surface rust. A wire wheel cleans it off

Just drive down a gravel road, that will sandblast it Chris.

It is carbon steel. I just went out and stuck a magnet to the driveshaft.........bummer. My 08 Sierra is aluminum, well at least the rear one is.

I had the parts dept run the VIN for both my current vehicle (with the aluminum driveshaft) and the All Terrian. The replacement part for both is the same part number.

 

Why would the same truck built the same week in the same factory have different driveshafts? Should I avoid the All Terrian because of this?
