2002 Chevy Silverado EVAP vent solenoid and vent valve location?

Recommended Posts

I have a 2002 Chevy Silverado 5.3l shortbox 4x4 and the SES light popped up with code P0446. I want to clean out my EVAP vent valve and possibly replace the EVAP vent solenoid but can't find it! My Haynes manual is worthless. It shows a nice picture of it but doesn't mention where it is. I've searched and searched forums and everybody talks about how easy it is to clean or replace. The only problem is that on my truck it appears that it is located on top of the fuel tank with no apparent way to reach it. None of the forums, or the GM TSBs I have read say anything about having to remove the bed or fuel tank to get to it. Does anybody have any suggestions or know where it is for sure? I would appreciate any help. Thanks!

Check behind your fuel tank (hopefully its there), I am not sure what year they moved them. On my 99 it was on top and there is no way to get to it without removing the bed (but that isn't to hard).

First photo here is where it was on my 99: http://www.justanswer.com/chevy/16x63-evap-canister-vent-solenoid-valve-2004-silverado.html

The mount just to the left of the highlighted 2 is the forward most bed mount.

This links photo is with it off the back of the tank: http://engine-codes.com/qa/6146/p0449-gmc-where-is-evap-located-so-i-can-replace-it

I hope that helps, good luck with it.

Here is a link with the GM TSB with photos, but I think there may actually be a newer one also: http://www.justanswer.com/chevy/1bo37-code-po446-evap-emission-control-system.html

Thanks for all the info Wolverine350R! Unfortunately it is not located behind the fuel tank but above it like on your '99. I can't believe the TSBs don't say anything about it being on top of the fuel tank. I'm not looking forward to taking the bed off as I have a topper installed. Do you think it would be easier just to drop the fuel tank? In any case I appreciate your help.
