2013 GMC 3500 or F350 gas truck's?

Ive been looking at new 2013 crew cab long bed 4x4 single rear tire GMC and F350 for the past month or so. I don't want the diesel motor so its either the 6.0 or new 6.2 from Ford. This will be my personal daily driver to replace my current 2004 F350 ext cab short bed 4x4 with 5.4 motor. Ive always been a Ford guy but i don't know the new HD GMC just look SO GOOD to me! I haven't found a 3500 anywhere in NJ, Pa, or Delaware but Ive driven two 2500 of the truck i want so heres the questions on the GMC that NO GMC DEALER CAN TELL ME!

-what is the difference between the 2500 and 3500 SRW truck?

-anybody know what MPG i should except from the 6.0 with crew cab long bed and 4.10 gears?

Difference is the 3500 has heavier springs. Someone else will have to chime in on mileage. On that note, you don't buy a 1 ton truck for mileage.

In addition to the overload springs, bigger rear axle (gas), engine rated 40 HP less, maybe different transfer case?, 3500 labels on the side and about $900 more. Duramax in either of the two has the same drive train.

 

I get 12 to 16 empty with my 2500 crew 3:73. Great truck by the way.

I believe the GM 2500HDs and above come standard with a hydro boost brake system, where the Fords have the hydro boost system starting with the F450s and above. As for the newer trucks I'm not sure since the HD updates in the 2011 model, but in the previous setup from 1999-2010 the frames were basically the same for the 2500Hd and 3500 SRW, with the exception of a heavier rating spring pack and I believe the tire and rim package was a little different as the 3500 SRW came with little bigger tire which had a higher per tire load rating, so the trucks overall rating was a little more (9200 vs 9900). But I remember reading the two shared a whole bunch of stuff. Hope this helps.

As for mpg I have heard they are all about the same, it's going to be 10-14, and possibly 15-17hwy unloaded, loaded and towing you going to be 8-10.

Mileage shouldn't be too much different, they are within a couple hundred pounds of each other.

 

First time I saw a 3500HD dually with a 6.0 vortec was the other day, I had no clue they even put a gas motor is the pickups above a 2500! Though I know the express vans come with the 6.0

I'm on mobile so I can't see bio, just names. But I thought they stopped putting gas motors after they got rid of the 8.1

I have a 2012 2500HD with a 6.0. The only differences I know of between the 2500 and 3500 was the springs, horse power, and smaller tires on the 3500. My mileage has been 14-15.5 hwy, 12-14 city, and 8.2 with a tall 3,000 lb wet truck camper and towing a 16' trailer with ATV's. I also have no need for a diesel.

 

2500 360hp at 5400RPM and 380ft-lbs at 4200RPM

3500 322HP at 4400RPM and 380ft-lbs at 4200RPM

And the only reason the number is lower is because they rate the horsepower in the 3500 at 4400 rpm... yet if you drive the 3500 its shift pattern and rev limiter is the same as the 2500hd lol.

 

Buy a 430 geared 6.2 Ford and don't look back.

Between the 2500 and 3500, the rear axle is bumped from the 10.5"AAM to the bigger 11.5"AAM from what I have noticed.

 

I get about 15mpg driving mixed commute, 100 miles a day (my daily driver was broken). On all interstate, with a light foot; it will get 16mpg running from corner to corner of PA, across the "mountains". I just did a trip from PA to ME and back, towing right around 3500#s, with another 1000#s of gear it got around 12mpg overall (towing). I would guess 4.10s wouldn't lose much if any mpg, and would probably do better city and towing.

 

It would do better if they came equipped with better tires. I have no doubt a set of Pirelli STRa's or Michelin A/S would put this truck closer to 18mpg (or better) on the interstate...the stock Duravis roll hard, its like having a brake hanging up.

I can tell you the there is more than just heavier springs with 2011+ 2500 gasser versus 3500 gasser HDs. The drive shaft and rear axle (I think it is called 12 bolt rear end) are heavier (just on gassers). The only difference between 2500 and 3500 diesel is springs.

In other words, the diesel 2500 has same axle driveshaft as 3500, but gas is different. I did not know this until I compared my 2012 3500 gasser wit a 2012 2500 gasser.

I love my truck and it is also my daily driver. Average a little over 12 mpg.
