Just wondering what is everyones thoughts on switching my 01 with 87,000 to synthetic oil, something like mobile 1? Is to too late, shoud I stay with conventional oil?

I got my 07 (08 Body style) 5.3L with 87k miles in Feb 2012, first thing I did was switch to Mobile1 high mileage 5W-30, at 108k I haven't had any issues yet. The dealer I got it from "just did an oil change" with some conventional crap and the motor ticked at idle, after the switch it's been silent, same story with my step dads 02 Tahoe 5.3L and he had over 100k when I did the switch.

Cold start knock is not oil related......

But the right oil can make it go away, at least in my experience

Some wrenches recommend going from conventional oil to a syn-blend and then to full synthetic to give the seal a kind of a break in for syn.

You need to resize the pistons to get rid of the knock. What do you mean by "make it run better?" Even a knocking 5.3 runs and idles perfectly smooth when tuned properly.

I meant to say if it will help it run smoother and maybe get a little bit better mpg.

It's not too late to switch to synthetic at 87k miles. It probably wont get rid of the cold start up tap that lasts less than 30 seconds. I bought a 2003 Tahoe with a little over 100k and switched over with no problems. It had the cold start up tap before and after. It has over 200k miles now and still runs strong and uses/burns no oil.
