Oil life monitor and mileage when changed?

Recommended Posts

Question for those who have done an oil change already. How many miles were you at and what was the OLM %?

I was also curious to know at what % does the OLM warn you it's time to change oil soon.

Thanks!

My service guy at the dealership told me that it had to be at 20% for GM to pay for it under the 2 year/24,000 mile maintenance contract the they give you for free on a 14. Don't about the mileage other than my wifes truck has 3400 miles and is at 49 percent now.

Why would the dealer care what %?

4 oil changes is 4 oil changes, regardless of when they do them.

To the OP, all my OLM's give the warning at or very close to 'zero'. The manual recommends changing the oil 'as soon as possible within the next 1000km (600miles).'

I get around 7k miles out of my OLM on my 2002. Some, like posted above, have gone to 10k miles before the OLM gets down to 0%. In that case, I would do a used oil analysis to see how well the oil held up.

Not my truck but my 2009 CTS4 went 12,000+ miles (2 yrs) and had 9% left on the OLM. Came factory filled with synthetic oil so the OLM is programmed longer. Had oil tested and came back good for continued use...

I'd also imagine the increased oil capacity on the 2014 plays a factor in how the OLM is calibrated.

4 oil changes is 4 oil changes, regardless of when they do them.

Because the dealer gets reimbursed from Chevy for the oil change, and Chevy wont reimburse until the OLM is at 20% or below.

Mine just displayed the 'change engine oil soon' message yesterday. The OLM is at 5%. I'm at about 7300 miles on this round. I had already planned on getting the oil changed and tires rotated after work today.

I know this is not GMT 900 side of forums but im looking for a very good synthetic oil to combat AFM. Any help be great. Also does GM dealers stock other brand oils?

Its going vary among dealers on what oils they have available. Mobil 1 is available thru GM parts so every dealer can get it. Other dealers will carry brands they want to carry or what their customers might demand.

Each dealer is an independent business and can operate as they see fit. They are in business to make money and will often make purchasing decisions on oils on the basis on what makes them the most $$.

Well thanks, most likely they will have Mobil 1. So one synthetic oil is not better than another as long as it's one of the above mentioned?

Mine said 20% as well. And I have heard that from about 95% of the guys here, Im guessing its more a contract thing between GM and the dealer vs what each dealer wishes to do.

And GM doesnt see 4 oil changes as 4 oil changes, they see each one as money. They know what their engine can do and handle, so they want to get through as many miles as they can before they have to do an oil change which means they have to pay. And if they can get people to stretch it out they may not have to do all four. And Im guessing GM has put a limit on it so the dealers dont get people in there using their 4 oil changes up quickly making GM pay. Because you know dealers would want that to bring their easy money oil changes back.
