5.3L flex fuel engine, Superchips programmer can disable variable cyli

Just curious what benefits would be gained by removing this function? Quicker acceleration? Probably end up with decreased fuel mileage but....

Has anyone got any real world experience doing this on their 5.3L truck?

Thanks much,

I haven't did this, but the only thing I'd suspect you'd get is less 4->8 hunt as it switches back and forth. Once you lay into the gas, it'll go full 8 cylinder, so other than that first fraction of a second, you won't gain anything acceleration wise.

Lots already posted on this. Eliminating AFM improves drivability, can actually improve mileage slightly, and helps prevent the oil consumption issue. The search feature is your friend.

With the superchips flashpaq you can actually firm up the shifts too. Its the unit I have. I disabled AFM, didn't see any decrease in MPG. Disabling AFM did stop my oil consumption issues as well. There is more customization with the superchips unit as well. There is a performance tune, I have never tried it. I purchased my unit used off of ebay. After I updated it, I installed the factory tune with disabled AFM and firmed the shift points up, and I think there was some transmission tow setting I enabled as well. I know when I use tow/haul mode now it very rarely switches to OD, unlike the stock tow/haul mode.

Nothing but good remarks for the superchips unit here!
