Radio Reception Issues

Recommended Posts

I wanted to start a seperate topic for this. My fm reception is to the point where I don't use the radio. The HD switches in and out to where you have to turn it off as well. I'd be looking to replace the radio with an aftermarket head unit but the integration with the my link probably makes it impossible. Please post up if your having issues.

I have on;y turned on HD radio once. Full disclosure, this is my first vehicle with HD radio, so not sure what is normal operation. Mine did cut out occasionally while going under a bridge. Other than that, so far so good.

My 2014 Silverado LTZ has the Bose radio with Nav and the FM does drift on stations that were solid on my '11 Silverado. It is not bad enough for me to take it to the dealer yet,but it is annoying. There are some HD stations that stay connected and others that drop out occasionally. The Bose sounds good, but now I lose my favorite station a lot.

This may be a different situation but thought it worth sharing. My pure FM local station will only play about 50 or 60 miles out of town. The '12 Silverado I sold to get the Denali would play130 to 140 miles out of town. With this comparison, I'm talking the same FM station and going in the same direction from town. The reception, in no way compares with my 2012 Silverado. When I lose it, I just switch to XM and keep on trucking.

I came out of a 2010 Sierra, I can tell the radio reception on my new 2014 is not as good. Couple of the smaller radio stations (total broadcasting watts) don't come in very well in the new truck.

HD radio should either be in or out since it is a digital signal, HD sounds fine here but most of the HD stations are the bigger stations.

NEW 2014 GMC Sierra has HORRIBLE Radio/HD Radio reception. There was a pretty long post about this before with a good amount of people on it. I've concluded they are pushing XM so hard that they made the reception for anything else atrocious.

Mine is horrible as well. Ive had the truck about 10 miles from the broadcast tower and it still wasnt clear. When I'm about 25 miles away, its equally static-y. About 50 miles and over a mountain pass, its non existent where my multiple work use GMT900's and 2005 are crystal clear!

Its a night and day difference and totally ridiculous. I see the manual states something about FM reception is only good for 10-40 miles away and also states that Cell Phones can cause interference........HA

I Also hate the XM reception. Any light tree build up on the side of the roads and it cuts out. I'd rather listen to light constant static on the FM than a song cutting in and out on XM

I have an XM subscription as well as a spotify premium membership. So I should note that 90% of the time, I am utilizing those during my commute.

XM - Reception is great and have no issues

FM - Reception is filled with static when not in HD. Unfortunately, when it does pick up HD it doesn't STAY in HD. Because I do not use FM regularly, I haven't gotten to the point where I disabled the HD. I should note that before, I had a 2008 Sierra Z71 and listened to FM frequently and the reception was great during the same commute.

I am commuting in a major metropolitan area.

I'll note too, that I called the phone number for the mylink and they said they can't do anything about reception. They can do a reset but that would not affect reception.

I would say marginal. The radio on the 2010 RAM I traded in and my 2009 G8 are much better. I thought new things are supposed to get better. Haven't tried XM yet. I use Rhapsody through my phone which has streaming and my playlists in it so don't feel like paying for another sub (i.e. XM). I can get the stations I want, but it's not as clear as my old truck. I agree with bladz1454's thought that this seems like them pushing XM. If you viewed the on-line materials for Intellink, there are no instructions for setting favorites, etc, for FM, just references to XM. I realize it's the same process but instead of saying "for FM and XM" it just says "XM".

Ace -

Where are you located? I am in the Twin Cities. My reception seems very good. It gets HD on the 3 stations i frequent within a couple of seconds. How long have you had your truck? I read about others with similar concerns... not sure why I am not experiencing any issues.

Mine seems to be hit or miss. Some days no problems and others it cuts out frequently.

I've been researching ways to boost signal but haven't found anything I can actually work with. It hasn't annoyed me enough to rip everything out.

I'm about 40 miles from Chicago. I agree with what another member said that it's hit or miss but the reception overall is not good. I've read about boosters etc.. and it doesn't sound like a good idea. Changing the antenna is not a good idea either because it is the right length. I'd like to check the connections for the antenna to the radio etc.. but I don't want to tear apart my dash. Does anyone know why we have a radio ID for HD? Can you do anything to improve reception for it? I know about XM that you can refresh the signal etc.. but not HD.

This is totally a side note but I've often wondered why radio's don't come with the ability to tune in the NOAA weather channels.

I have a 2004 Silverado 4x4 with the Bose system. I just put a brand new aftermarket head unit in it and still no sound so I bought a used amp off eBay, installed it and still nothing.   Fuses are all good and all connections are as they should be   I’ve read a lot saying it could be the speakers. If one speaker blows could it shut down the whole system?   I’m at a lose and nothing I have read has been specific enough to my problem nor has anything given me a confirmed fix   Any help would be much appreciated. Thank you

Bought truck in July and had infotainment issues from the start, the screen is black but backlit, the screen displays but will not work with touch, sometimes the hard buttons will move it other times not. The climate control changes sometimes will display, loss of back up markers, sometimes loss of back up camera with a screen error of connection lost, audio is lost sometimes, CarPlay won't always sync and I'm sure other things I am forgetting as well. Only has issues on start up, never going down the road so I don't think its a lose or broken wire, improper pin alignment. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. Its so random how long it doesn't work for, not very often stopping and starting will fix it, sometimes its a day or more before it works again.

The radio was replaced at dealer, 2 weeks later it starts acting up again, dealer worked with TAC(?) to determine they were replacing the radio again, strike forced it to be delayed but eventually replaced, less than 2 weeks later same thing, then they replaced the screen/digitizer, I went to pick it up, started truck and screen was blank. Now after having my truck for about 3 weeks (this time) GM wants to try replacing the bus cable from radio to screen but they want me to not connect my iPhone as they think it could be causing the issue, even with video documentation showing my phone not plugged in and blue tooth disabled and 2 times with dealership mechanics seeing my phone in my pocket.

      My questions are -
      1) anyone else have this issue? what was the fix?
      2) What kind of compensation should I be seeking for 5, almost 6 months now of it not working right, repeated trips to dealership, long waits in lounge, being told it was fixed only to show up and it's not? I have kept extensive records for every time it happens, videos of probably half of the instances.

I'm looking for a radio for my 1990 GMC S15 pickup. Salvage guy found one for a '93 vehicle that looks exactly the same. Did GMC use the same radio in '93 as '90?
      Thanks,
      Rick

      Hi everybody!

As some of you may know, I've been working hard to help the lovely members of this forums program some of their vehicles to add unique and exciting features to their trucks and cars.

Well, I'm happy to announce a project I've been working very hard on over the last few months. Welcome to Coastal Flash!

      Final_Short.mp4

We have been spending countless hours taking the time to develop new products and features for our line of vehicles and add them all to an easy to use marketplace for all members of the forum to enjoy.

We're happy to offer free shipping on all kit purchases across North America and also are happy to provide phone support to anybody who purchases our services. Plus, we will beat any price quoted by our competitors on kits and programming services. It's not about being the cheapest, but about making these upgrades more affordable for the average user. The entire reason this market was formed was because we felt the current market was monopolized and overcharging for their services. Coastal Flash is here to put an end to that.

      Currently, we offer:

Both 2.0-2.5 HMI Carplay/Android Auto kits & Programming Denali Cluster Programming and Upgrades Video in Motion Unlocks Rear Camera in Motion Unlock & Harness Custom HMI Boot Animations and Splash Screens Amplifier repair Late 90's - mid 2010's Radio Linking and Testing Navigation Updates Custom Reverse Engineering Services And many more services...
So please, if you are interested in getting any of these upgrades done to your vehicle, I encourage you to take a look at what we've been up to!

Feel free to take a look through some of the upgrade threads posted here on the forums and look at the reviews some customers have been leaving for our services. I think their words speak for themselves.

I'm also very open to ideas or suggestions from forum members of what you'd like to see installed into your vehicles, so feel free to send me a PM or an email and let me know what mod you'd like to see done next. Nothing is too big or too small.

I'll be consistently monitoring this thread and updating it with new services and discoveries as we make them available.

Oh, and one more thing, we're offering some special discounts for Black Friday and Cyber Monday so feel free to stop by, take a look around and save some cash on that new upgrade you've been wanting to get.

Thanks for stopping by and thank you to everyone who has shown us so much encouragement and support over the last year as we've gotten our products and services tuned in. I can't wait to show you what else we have in store for you in the near future 😉

      Talk to you all soon...
