Washington — General Motors Co. said Friday it will recall 370,000 full-size pickup trucks for fire risks after eight reported fires — and the automaker is urging owners not to leave trucks unattended while idling.

The Detroit automaker said it will recall the 2014 Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra to reprogram software that could lead to overheating of exhaust components, potentially causing engine compartment fires.

GM is contacting customers to alert them of the potential issue, which often is signaled by a continuous yellow “check engine light” and an “engine power reduced” message in the driver information center. GM has confirmed eight fires from this condition, “three of which were on customer owned vehicles, but no injuries. All occurred in areas with very cold weather.”

Recall letters will be mailed Jan. 16, but customers can contact dealers for appointments beginning early next week., GM said The repair will take about 20 minutes. Until then, customers are urged to avoid leaving their trucks to idle unattended.

GM told the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Friday it would recall about 303,000 trucks with 4.3-liter V-6 and 5.3-liter V-8 engines in the U.S. Approximately 67,000 additional trucks that were exported and sold in Canada and Mexico also are being recalled. Trucks with 6.2-liter V-8 engines are not part of the recall.

Damn and i posted a picture of a burnt LTZ as a joke last month that I saw at a junk yard. I wonder if it was due to the same issue???

I would say no as that looks like it was a theft recovery. They took the parts they needed and set it on fire.

This particular yard buys lemons and freight damaged vehicle directly from GM through contract. Since all the parts were there just removed and were laying in the bed it is possible it went through an investigation as I would expect GM to do and once finished sold off. I am just repeating what they told me as they would know if it was indeed a theft recovery as the are titled as such. Regardless it is a bit shocking, but luckily it sounds like an easy fix. I just forwarded this to my father in law to get his new high country checked out, but i believe his was the 6.2 and not included.

That's wild. I have no engine lights so I guess I'm good to go?

Give your dealer a call and have them run your VIN to be safe.

Hey Dj0nes,

If you would like to private message me your VIN we would be happy to check your vehicle for any open recalls as well!

jdidnotdo71,

Happy to hear that your dealer was able to take care of these for you and you are noticing a positive difference! Let us know if anything changes.
