Garage too short for my new GMC Sierra. Ideas?

Recommended Posts

okay, so this topic took the wind out of my sails a little bit... sorry to hear about the OP and his garage vs truck. My concern, I am in the process of relocating to Texas for work and have rented an apartment with a garage. I spent so much time worried about the length of the truck I didn't consider the height of the garage. My Denali has 22s and an ARE Z series topper with Yakima racks. The truck specs say ~74in in height which with a standard 7ft garage door should give me 8-10 inches of clearance. Anyone have any issues with your truck and the garage door?

I'm not sure if your asking the question "Will my truck fit in my garage". If so a tape measure can answer that question for you. I'm sure people have these problems, not many tho, unless moded. My 2500HD fit in a standard garage door.

He got it work out, he told his wife to leave her car out side so he could get more room for his. He now has plenty of room in the apartment parking lot where he lives now. Hee Hee, I couldn't help myself.

I like that!

I was asking because the truck in is Florida and I am in Texas... a tape measure helps me here but all I have for the truck is the specs that GMC gives... since the OP had issues with the printed specs versus the real specs I was looking for any helpful results that other members had experienced. My hope was if it didn't look like it was going to fit I could dump the garage for a carport... but thanks for you input.

My wifes car and toy get the garage, my truck and my toy get the sun. I had the bright idea of building a man cave garage on the back 1/2 acre, that became a guess house. Income property says the wife, im going to try for a carport next. Shes pretty smart.

Simple, just remove the bumper every time you park it. Hahaha

But you could always use this as an excuse to build a big second garage and the new truck is just your justification! If anyone asks just say the investment was worth it to help slow the depreciation of the truck!

Oh the humanity! I hope you don't actually haul stuff in it!

Uncivilized.

My truck sits in the driveway and is protected by Cquartz. My wife's car has sat outside for 6 years and looks better than new. My jet ski and tools sit in the garage.

Just saw this thread. I had to rip out my workbench to get my Denali to fit. But it gave me a great excuse to haul a bunch of crap to the dump and then pick up some insulation and drywall to finish most of my garage. Now I just need to find a spot for all my tools that have been moved to the wife's side of the garage. . Currently dreaming up some shelving units, just need to find the time to get them done.

You could build a garage "bump-out"... (sorry, I haven't read the entire 8 pages if someone else mentioned this)

This person added about 3 feet to the length of his garage and used the existing door.

Remove the bumper , install a sleek paint to match rollpan and put a hidden hitch tow bar behind it with a flipup license plate holder. Still b able to tow and be a bit protected in rear end crash thanks to the hitch thats hiding behind the rollpan. That is what I had setup in my last truck.

Your first issue is going to be with width. Most standard garage doors are 8 ft wide I believe. Mine are 9 feet wide and I just squeeze by with maybe 6 inches to spare - 3 on each side. You might fit if you can close your mirrors. Length will be your next issue. Most apartment garages I've been in are tiny. Height would be my last concern.

This garage is actually classified as a two car and I was really impressed with the size... it is 17ft 9 in wide by 26 ft deep. Might not be big enough for two big cars but my Denali should fill it nicely.

  • 1 year later...

Hate to revive an old crazy thread...but it doesnt ever seem perfectly clear to me after reading all 8 pages as to the exact length of a 15 short box denali....My garage is 234 inches exactly and if the truck is truly 229.5 I shouldnt have a problem fitting it into my garage. Can anyone comment on what the end results were from everyone? Thanks so much. Great being a new member of the forum.
