2003 Chevy 2500hd crew cab speaker installation question

I am in the process of replacing all 4 speakers in my 2003 Chevy 2500hd Crew Cab. I just did one today and it didn't go as smooth as planned. This might be a little hard to explain without pics but the factory speaker was mounted on a bracket that just popped into place. I was hoping to use that bracket with the new speakers but it did not seem possible to use that. So instead I just drilled 4 holes in the door frame and screwed the new speaker in like that. The problem with that was I could not get the plastic speaker cover back on because it was hitting the screws. The speakers came with screws and clips but I could not get the clips to line up with the holes I drilled. They would not fit over the speaker hole right so I just screwed the screws into the hole.

The speakers are Kenwood flush mount speakers, can't remember the model number. Would I need a certain type of speaker to be able to use the original bracket? Should any speaker be able to attach to the bracket? If you don't know what bracket I am talking about, I can take a pic of it.

I am pretty sure that on the Crutchfield website, when you plug in your vehicle info, it gives you a list of compatible audio components and also provide install kits with necessary hardware specific to the vehicle. Try that.
