E85 use

Hello all. Still new to the forums. I apologize if this has been discussed before. How much power do you get using E85. At the dealership I was told using E85 gives like 30 more horsepower. I've read you do get more power. Also how much les mpg Using E85.

I don't remember noticing more power but MPG decreased from an average of 18.1 mpg down to an average of 14.6 mpg in my 2008 1500 Crew Cab.

The gain sounds about right for a 2014. I use it in my 2011 depending on what type of driving I do and there is a notable power/responsiveness gain but my mileage drops from 17 mixed driving to 11 or so.

You get 25 HP gain on the 2014 5.3 and you feel it. I went from 17 in town to 14 MPG. I was running 93 gas so it was a savings for me. I notice a differnts between 87 and 93 because of the knock retard, and had an improvement in gas mileage. All things in comparison in my case I get more power and spend less money using E85.

Ethanol gets a lot of bad press. Many guys just won't use it. Me, I don't listen to what a lot of people say, so I had to try it in my '14 Silverado with a 5.3 ad 3.42 rear gears. My brochure says it raises H.P, from 355 to 380, and torque from 383 to 416. Those are peak numbers and we don't drive at those rpms. I wanted to see how it acted in everyday driving situations.

 

It seems to cost me more than 2 miles per gallon not quite three. The responsiveness of the truck improved quite a bit. Ethanol prices are up around here so it's about a push as for the price versus premium, per mile driven. E-85 costs less but burns more. For me, the cost is worth it for the increased power, responsiveness and fun.

 

It's basically free horsepower. It beats changing intake and exhaust systems that cost well into 4 figures, or getting a tune that may void your warrantee. It takes a couple of tanks before you'll feel the full effect, so I wouldn't expect a change instantly.

With my generation of truck, I don't get the HP bump, but I only take a lose of 1mpg in town and a few more mpg for hightway driving. It took a while but the price of e85 around here is about equal if not cheaper per mile to burn. Plus I never get the high RPM ping that I'd occasionally get with regular. The engine runs a little smoother but no real noticeable performance difference, other than my tail pipe stays pretty clean compared to gasoliine.

Damn... It's good to have all the good info to counter the occasional horrible info posted in these forums. There is a VERY noticeable amount of power in the 5.3 running on E85. Before I tuned truck I seen about a 20-25% loss in MPG. It's a little better now though and I run E85 unless I'm caught somewhere that doesn't have it.
