Removing the Air Bag and Steering Wheel

Recommended Posts

Looks good. Would you mind snapping a close up of the 10 pin on the harness you removed? Zooming in blurs it too much.

Did you leave the pods in the back? What about the cruise? Did you leave that or swap it as well? I would assume that it was the same as the other one.

Here are pictures that I took tonight to switch over.

Did you replace your dash trim (the ones around your air vents and radio)? Does it match the trim on the wheel? Where did you get it from? I am interested in getting the new trim bc the dash looks so plain without it but it is so expensive.

Yes I did including the door trim. I bought everything from www.gmpartsdirect.com. Everything matches.

I'll take a picture later tonight. Yes you have to leave the pods in the back or you will have a good size hole. I did swap the cruise from my original wheel since I know it worked and yes it's identical to the other switch.

Cruise lights are now working again.

Yep.

If you don't mind me asking, how much did you spend on all of it? How did you buy the door trim? Did you use this "kit" below?

Sure np, I didn't use that kit since mine is a reg cab but got a good deal off of eBay for the door trim. $30 but the dash goes something like $30ish for the left side, $87 for the center and another $30ish for the right. The color is the Synthesis though.

I was going to do the steering wheel swap in my work truck but I just can't get over the holes in the back or the dead buttons for the radio controls. I was thinking of buying a new steering wheel and leaving it with my upholsterer to do a leather wrap/stich on. Then when he's done, just swap it out my original. That way I don't get the big holes or dead buttons.

Otherwise it sure would be nice if someone could figure out how to get those to work. :)

You could just put it on and get your BCM programed for it, but if you did that you should probably just do the 4.2 inch DIC. That is if its even possible.

Key words being "if it's even possible". Too bad gm can't/won't sell an upgraded steering wheel accessory with a code in the box like they do with the towing mirrors.

Could you elaborate on the towing mirrors.

The gm accessory mirrors come with a authorization code in the box for programming if needed.

It's a time consuming upgrade due to the required door harness replacement.

Do you think it will work on a WT? I don't have the power mirrors. Would they be added with this?

I have a WT as well but I had the power heated mirrors already. I think I saw a thread about adding power mirrors to a truck. Do you have power windows and door locks? The reference sheet doesn't show it for non power mirrors, but who knows what is possible if you have the authorization code? The mirrors and harness will set you back close to $900.

There are a couple of other guys on here looking to do the same thing.

You will need a door switch as well, there may be a couple from the guys upgrading their mirrors to the powerfold tow mirrors that may part with their original switch. There is also a guy on the page about the powerfold mirrors that may be able to get you everything you need to make it work in a non-power mirror truck. Doesn't hurt to ask.

You can also visit his web page http://oempartsdirectinc.com/and ask him about the mirror upgrade. He took a day or two to answer my email as he is a one man show.
