Do I really need On Star......

Recommended Posts

....for the navigation system to work properly? Right now I am still on the introductory offer from them, expires in October. Do I need the On Star subscription service in order to get the aural directions? Just what does ON Star give you with the nav system? I can't understand why GM would install a nav system where you wouldn't have turn by turn directions.

Thanks.

No you do not need Onstar for the navigation to work. The advantage to Onstar is that you can call them up while driving and ask for directions and they will download those directions to your nav. Without Onstar you will need to input/find your destination and get directions on the nav yourself - a little more work but I've had no problems and I don't have Onstar any longer.

there are two types of navigation systems for these trucks.

1. Onstar subscribed members can have turn by turn navigation directions beamed directly to the truck.

2. In-Dash navigation system where you can manually input addresses and view on the dash and or in the 8" touch screen.

How do you do it without onstar?

If you have the navigation radio option you just enter an address or search for a POI like any other GPS. If you don't have the nav radio then you need to use something else if you don't want OnStar.

when I bought the truck - the ONLY thing the salesman told me I didn't know, was the RemoteLink APP for my phone.

it remote starts/stops - remote lock/unlock, panic button etc.

it also has a simple Map NAV - you can look up an address or PointOfInterest(POI) and send it to your truck.

it will download turn-by-turn instructions - EVEN IF YOU DO NOT HAVE NAV ON YOUR TRUCK. it won't show a MAP, but it will give you Turn-ByTurn...

i used it twice - horrible routes…in my opinion.

I use the WAZE App on my phone - just SOOOO Much better - and yes, better than GoogleMaps, or Siri..or OopaLoompa…Magic 8Ball..

I too use the Waze App. The App uses Bing for directions, does it still work after onstar is canceled?

Eh, I've gotten used to using Google Maps for directions. I wish it would bluetooth the map to the 8" screen, no need for built-in nav with new phones. A relative's Cruze even says Google Map directions through the speakers when it is synced. I haven't tried that in the truck yet.

Waze will hook up thru the speakers when you connect to bluetooth. and announce warnings, etc.

the Remote Link SHOULD STILL without OnStar - it's a separate feature/app. (thank goodness)

i will find out when I start my truck in airport parking when i'm about 10 minutes from getting back to it.

will let you know.

I read the remote app will work for 5 years without an OnStar subscription but don't know if that means the Nav part will work or just the remote start and lock-unlock feature. Wish I had the regular Nav instead of the OnStar app

I just tried playing with the App.

Diagnostic is disabled.

Remote works.

NAV turn by turn disabled.

For them to work.. you have to pay for Onstar svc. No thanks..
