Air bag light on. Electrical troubleshooting.

Recommended Posts

I have a 2006 Sierra and having some issues with a fuse blowing. My air bag light is on in the dash and I found it had a blown fuse. I replaced the fuse and blew immediately. I am not very good with electrical troubleshooting so can anyone give me advice to find this short? Is there a procedure to find shorts other than tracing every wire? Is there a particular spot these wires are know to short in that will shorten my hunt? Also, at the same time my airbag light came on, the temp/compass in my rearview mirror went out. Anyone know if the air bag and compass are on the same fuse? Thanks in advance

You need a schematic and a capability to self diagnose it or have it scanned and the code diagnosed ..

If you have 0 experience do not try this yourself

On your mirror is the small light power light on?

I highly doubt the airbag and mirror would be on the same fuse. GM would not risk being sued if the mirror shorted and disabled the airbags.

It might be wires to both systems were damaged/pinched, etc. at the same time.

Since you said you are no good at electrical trouble shooting AND this involves the airbag system, I would have pro repair it. Not worth the risk of triggering an airbag by DIY.

The power light on the mirror is not on. I tried unplugging the electrical connections under both seats and also the mirror. I tried a new fuse and it blew right away. Thanks for all the help, I will just take it to the dealer. I was trying to avoid my local dealer at all costs and the next closest is an hour and a half away.
