Hole Below Power Outlet

I have a 2003 2500HD Ext. Cab LS 4WD. My question is about the hole below the power outlet. Should there be a panel covering it? If not, what is the purpose? It is such an odd shaped cavity, has anyone found a good use for it? Thanks for any info.

I think it's for a cassette player when that is added in the option list.

 

Otherwise, it's for our imagination.

My cassette player is in the head unit with the CD. There is not a cover over it. I use it to hold glasses (wife and kid). As far as I'm conserned the more storage the better. I wish they put pockets in the rear door panels.
