I'll replace the water pump when it starts leaking.

How old is your cooling system? if the radiator has started to leak (unless a manufacturers defect), you are running on reduced radiator pressure thru the water pump.

When you purchase a new radiator (and cap if needed) you are now back to running at optimum water pressure (psi) and I will bet you dollars to doughnuts that it will not be very long period of time that the water pump will start leaking either through the weep hole or behind the gasket.

DO IT RIGHT THE FIRST TIME!!!!!

Should I get OEM or would a gates water pump be suitable?

I am not familiar with the aftermarket water pumps, the LS1 enthusiasts purchase electric pumps by Meziere.

I would stay with the stock pump.
