ABS EBCM brake light dim

1999 GMC Suburban AWD push button 4x4 with tow package.

With 1999 being a transition year, I cannot find anything directly related to my issue.

I have read dozens of threads on the early activation of the ABS and that is where my trouble started long ago.

History:

NO lights on NO codes. Had the low speed cut in. My VIN was not part of recall.

I have the KH model 310 EBCM. (non repairable)

Installed wheel bearings, system worked for two days until I hit a pothole. ABS light came on, got pissed and pulled power.

Several years passed and I am now trying to repair the whole system.

Upon reconnecting power to EBCM:

Confirmed function of parking brake switch working normal.

brake light and ABS light off upon start, and then one or the other or both would come on over 4mph.

One particular day, both went out (cannot duplicate) and ABS activated at every speed. Upon re-start, never happened again.

Course of action:

Replaced both front speed sensors-- both lights out upon start.

Above 4mph-- Brake light out, ABS light on. Only getting signal from one side.

Reinstalled factory sensor on passenger side-- both lights out upon start.

Above 4mph-- Random combination of ABS and brake light returned.

Replaced both front bearings with new sensors.

Above 4mph BRAKE LIGHT ON - ABS LIGHT OUT

Cleared the multiple codes created over time. Two codes returned: 273 & 284

Here is where it gets wierd..............

Replaced EBCM with used unit. I acknowledge this unit may also be bad.

ABS light and BRAKE light are out when key turned to run position.

Depressing parking brake brightly illuminates dash light. Goes out when released.

While cranking engine, brake light again illuminates brightly.

As soon as engine starts, it appears to go out.

In reality it is on, only so dim you cannot see it unless it is dark outside. It stays this way until you turn key off.

Depressing parking brake brightly illuminates dash light, goes back to dimly lit after release. (with engine running)

The ABS light has not returned. "panic stop" on grass does not activate ABS.

The ABS unit is on the drivers inner fender. KH model 310

The ground locations on my vehicle are not accurate according to the dozens of posts I have read.

There are NO grounds under the drivers door.

There is no ground on frame above the driver side control arms.

Ground at the right rear of engine block. Cleaned.

Ground on drivers side of the trailer hitch. Cleaned.

Single ground from battery splits to the block and the frame above passenger control arms. Cleaned.

Zero resistance between ABS pump ground and battery terminal ground.

Above 12v at pump power lead.

Pump motor runs when powered directly.

Suggestions at this point ??

Thanks in advance.

Sorry, it was code co286, NOT 284.

Anyone know where wire B+ is?

B = Battery

+ = positive

Are you following the diagnostic tree for that code ?

Replaced the braided rear ground from the block to the frame.

What I thought was good lead had actually dissolved inside the channel it runs through.

Also ran a new lead from the same frame bolt to the firewall.

Light was still on really dim, only with engine running.

Went back to a buddy to try and read the codes again. Problem is he works at a Dodge dealer.

Could not read any codes, but the last time he had a demo unit of a more powerful scanner.

Replaced the EBCM with another used controller. Tried again with both a MAC and OTC scanner and

was able to connect and it read no codes, but it would only show DTCs.

Couldn't tell if it was really reading ABS codes or not.

I won't know until it gets dark to see if the light is really out.
