Leather Seats and Cat Claws

Recommended Posts

Woke up Saturday and realized I had left my driver's side window cracked (Ok about 4-5 Inches) and my huge cats (12+ pounders) managed to get in. Generally not a big deal unless they CLAW THE SEATS. Lets just say it was a "well that really sucks(plus some)" moment since I only have 3500 miles on it.. Can't fix the past, so, what kind of options does anyone know about fixing it? Do I have to get the whole seat back replaced or can they just replace the leather?

Leather seats do not hold up to cat claws...Weird.

The cheap route would be seat covers. But, you can just have the back recovered.

Any clue how much it would cost to have it recovered? Should I do it through a dealer or custom upholstery shop?

Some good furniture repairs tech might be able to help you. Have a run to a few furniture shops and see what their repair techs say.

There's no free lunches. Claim it on your insurance and you'll pay for it later. Besides, you'll likely have the deductable to deal with.

Here's what I'd consider ...

(1) take it to an independent upholstery shop for replacement of the center panels on both front seats, upper and lower, with perforated leather.

(2) just have them replace the damaged panels.

I would call a dealer and figure out what the seat back cover cost. I can tell you I replaced a cloth seat back cover once and it was like $275, Im guessing the seat back cover being leather, would cost around $500 and an hours of your time to replace.

Have you thought about de-clawing your cat(s)? I even went a step further and got rid of my cat all together! I'm just messing with ya, I've been in your shoes before as well.

Furniture shop should be able to help you on that.

Had some critters cause about 600 bucks in damage to the truck, insurance covered it all under "0 deductible Comprehensible". I always go 0 Comprehensible on newer vehicles then throttle back as they get older. If you can't get it repaired for under 200, you might as well go on Ebay and get a replacement seat for that cost.

This happened to me in the past and I went the OEM route instead of a leather shop. The seat covers can be ordered through your dealer OR an online store that offers GM OEM parts.

I had to replace one of the top covers in my 2010 because of a puppy chewing through my drivers side seat. If I remember correctly, it was somewhere in the $100 range and the job was very simple, took about 15min. to remove the damaged cover and install the new cover. Very simple process and they basically snap right into place.

I would go custom, make the centers cat skin hide down the middle... I kid, I kid....

With it being that new I would go OEM if it was me.

Ditto to what most of the folks here are saying - just call a local upholstery shop, they can probably fix it. If you're in the Chicago area, PM me and I can give you a recommendation for a shop that specializes in auto upholstery.

Cats love to sink their claws into leather. I have 2 cats and used to have a leather couch. The backside looked like it was perforated. It wasn't when it was new.
