Tansmission filter and fluid change 2008 GMC, 1500, 2WD, V6

All the DIY on utube on this topic is for the 99-06 models. GM has changed some of the plumbing down there. Some say that you have to unbolt the Y pipe from the exhaust manifold. They also say that you have to remove the two torx bolts to remove the transmission cable shift bracket to get enough clearance to drop the pan. Can you skip all this and just unbolt the pan like the the old days? Has anyone done this on a 2nd gen? What size are the torx bolts? Thanks!

Bend the bracket , if the exh has to go ,then the exh has to go , not rocket science ,,,, look !!!!

Here is a good "how to" on servicing the transmission on a GMT800

Raise and suitably support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle.

 

Place a drain pan under the transmission oil pan.

 

Remove the oil pan drain plug, if equipped.

 

If necessary, remove the bolts and position aside the range selector cable bracket for clearance while lowering the pan. It is not necessary to remove the cable from the lever or bracket.

 

Remove the oil pan bolts from the front and sides of the pan only.

 

Loosen the rear oil pan bolts approximately 4 turns.

 

Lightly tap the oil pan with a rubber mallet in order to loosen the pan to allow the fluid to drain.

I never had to take my y pipe off. Mine is a 4wd, so I had to disconnect the front driveshaft. That was easy-peezy. Overall, not too hard of a job. I wouldn't even consider trying to take that little seal out that comes with the new filter. Satan himself put that in there. I always take the torx bolts off the selector, it's never been a problem for me. I think I put in like 5 quarts almost exactly upon refill.
