305/55/20 or 275/60/20

Recommended Posts

I need help deciding what to do here. I put a 2" RC level on the truck and need to get a 33" tire to fill the gap up and out.

Two options that I'm considering, please post up comments or thoughts.

Option 1: 305/55/20 Tires. This setup has the potential to rub the sway bar or liner, but both are very minimal. Maybe even a 1/4" spacer would cure it. Guessing these would also put a dent in the MPGs. The good parts are that they look great with a wide footprint and won't fling rocks on the side of the truck.

Option 2: 275/60/20 Tires with a 1.5" spacer/adaptor. The spacer is to push them out, as I think with stock offset the 275 are a tad too tucked. 1.5 is the minimum size to clear the studs. The good part is cheaper tires and not much of a MPGS hit. Bad part, they'll poke out a bit and fling rocks.

I'll post pics of both in a few seconds.

305's will look a lot better, not only wider, but the lugs are usually larger and more aggressive looking. I have 305's with 1/4" spacers that cost $20 on ebay and they just barely rub the sway bar at full lock, but my wheels are a +31mm while stock are +27 so stock probably wont rub.

You can actually go with 1.25" spacers as there is only 1.25" of thread on the lugs, 1.5" and 1.25" spacers will require grinding the nipple of the lugs off.

Thank you for your feedback, appreciate it.

As far as the spacers/lug nipples. Everything I have read in regards to 1.5" spacers and OEM wheels, they work fine as the OEM wheels have pockets in the back to bury the nipple, so to say. So they don't need trimming. 1.25", I can see them needing trimming though, as the pockets are not that deep.

Oh yes you're right! Sorry I forgot about that, I remember checking my wheels when I got them and being kinda cheesed that they didn't have the pockets. I did measure my lugs though. They are 1.75" long, .5" is nipple, and half of the nipple is tapered.

They can't help the way they were created! :P

The 305's do look better imo but personally I can't justify the added weight and stiffer ride that'll come with it. I originally wanted 305/50 but I feel like the sidewall will be too small. So I'll probably go with 275/60 when its time for new tires. I still want the 2" spacers though, personally I think they look great. Gives off a nice aggressive stance.

Ya I didn't want the weight of 305's either. My hankook dynapro ATM's are actually quite light as they aren't LT tires. Theyre an XL P metric with 6 ply's. They weigh in at 45lb, a lot better than an LT tire that's about 70-80lb. I haven't lost any MPG with them. They come in 205/55r20 I beleive as well.

Nitto makes the Terragrappler in both E (LT) and Regular.

Yup they were my other option, but they were a lot more money. The terra grapplers in XL are also very light.

I'm trying to find weights right now. Nitto doesn't have it on their site.

Apparently the originally tg's didnt have much of a weight difference between lt and p. The new ones must have a better stronger sidewall on the lt's which is why they weigh more.

I cant seem to find my tires in a 305/55r20 P metric, so I guess they only make them in a 305/45r22 and 305/50r20

Nitto in 275/55/20 is 44lbs

Nitto in 275/60/20 is 41lbs

Nitto in 305/55/20 is 53lbs

So, it's a 12lb swing between 275/60 and 305/55 in P.
