CHANGE ENGINE OIL LIGHT and synthetic

Recommended Posts

Hey fellas, I have a quick question for ya, and this probably has come up before.  My Message Center in my 2002 Sierra comes on when I start the truck and says CHANGE ENGINE OIL, I read the manual and reset it, thinking that because it is based on revolutions rather than mileage, and the oil pressure is fine, that it was merely something I needed to reset.  Since I use Mobil 1 Synthetic in all my cars, I take them at least 7k between changes.  Is this the proper thing to do, or might something else trigger the light?  I assume I did the standard thing, as this truck runs like a top, and it's the first time I have had the truck (owned it two months) after I put synthetic in, that it has done this.  Thanks for the help

Hey Ideeho,

Did you reset the Oil life monitor when you changed the oil?

I am on my 2nd interval with Mobil 1 the first was about 4500 miles with 0-30,  I am now using Mobil 1 10-30 and will go to 5000 miles.  I don't think that you should have any probems with 6000 or 7000 mile interval with Mobil 1.

As I understand it, the oil monitor calculates the type of driving, temperature, stop and go etc. I'm sure it is calculated on regular oil not syn.  I would expect the light to come on before 7000 miles.

Thanks, that's what I was hoping, it was reset the last time I put Mobil 1 in, and right now is about 3k into the oil, so I assumed it's set for regular rather than synthetic.  Good to have the rig tell you things like this though, got to admit that.  Maybe I will call OnStar and see if they can diagnose my oil pressure for me, heck I pay for it, might as well use it.
