3/4 ton duramax or 1/2 ton 6.2L for 7K - 10K lbs

Recommended Posts

Ok I am just about to buy a new 20ft V-nose enclosed trailer 20ftx8ftx6ft total size to haul a RZR 1000 4 seater and extra parts, totes for apparel and other odds and ends. Total weight wont be over 10K but realistically speaking closer to 6K-7K. I have looked at a ton of 2013 and new duramax's and some new 14'-15' half tons with the 6.2L. I want the extra grunt so please don't mention the 5.3L. This will be a 3 outta 4 weekends a month deal so someone please help me make a wise decision. Would like to be able to keep one for at least 150K - 200K miles on it. Thanks in advance

How far are you towing? Mountains or flats?

I would say 3/4 ton territory due to the duty cycle you will put the truck thru, not just the motor bit the entire drivetrain.

How about the 6.0 HD gasser? I love mine and it would pull that all day long. If gas mileage is important maybe Duramax.

If you want to tow and make it 200,000 miles you likely will want the Duramax. I just traded a Duramax, and diesels are made to tow! The 2500 suspension has more to do with the extra weight capacity than the engine does though, so while you may not want a 6.0 2500, it would certainly handle a trailer better than a 6.2 1500. If this is your daily driver and you want a plush ride get the 1500.

Pretty good advise from everyone. Its all in what you reallywant tradeoffs either way. Ive had a 6.2 NHT it was a beast bought as close as you can get to a 2500 and stay 1/2 ton. But my 2500 gasser is light years ahead frame, etc for pulling and as the other men here that have the Duramax there the best you can get for pulling. Go drive them both 6.2 and the 2500 see what works for you.

take it from a guy with a bit of experience in this department. I had a 6.2 1/2ton and hauled a 24x8.5 trailer for the race team between 6k-8k 7 weekends a summer. The 1/2 ton will do it, but it is not enjoyable. You feel the road, the wind etc in 1/2 ton. I upgraded to a '15 2500 duramax and can say it is night and day different. set the cruise control and enjoy the ride, Mkes driving 10+ hours feasible and enjoyable.

[emoji115] This!!!

Diesel allows you to set cruise and hold a gear and maintain speed. Miss my 'Max, but I don't miss the stiff ride!dc2aad7e89426bdd70dcb41bb629dc24.jpg

Thanks guys for the info. I will take the one advice about driving both. How do dealers react if you show up with a trailer to test out trucks? I'm really leaning towards a d-max now though. Being that I would like to be the one to rack up most of 200k + miles and can't really afford $65k for a new one what mile range and what all should I look for mechanically speaking in a used one?

I would look for a clean 11-14 LML all stock

i have 78,500 kms on my '15, zero issues so far all stock. Stock tires were junk. But i would say anything under 100k would be fine. The mileage doesnt seem to effect price on these trucks as much as options and what not.

i paid 65K for my new one and they had a used on on the lot with 30k and they still wanted 58k...mind you we get a corporate discount. sticker was 81k on my truck. So to pay 65 was worth buying the new one with the better interest rate.

Thats one super nice truck. All Terrain edition? and yeah your right, mileage doesnt' seem to effect price at all.
