GM lists an "Underbody Shield" as an accessory. Is this thing worth a second thought or should I look at other skid plate options? I'd like to at least protect the front diff and transfer case.

The GM accessory kit contains 2 aluminum plates to replace the large plastic underbody shield that comes standard on the 4x4 trucks. It also comes with the steel transfer case skid plate and all associated bolts needed. I got the set off of Ebay, the best price I could find, and it's great. It you search you should be able to find the thread with pics of the plates next to the original plastic one. Don't believe the GM accessory picture as it shows the original plastic shield and not the aluminum ones in the kit.

Sweet! Thanks for the info. I'll have it added when I get the truck.

Well worth it, especially if you can get it for under $200. It is decent quality aluminum and fairly easy to put on. The Z71 "off road" trucks should have come with them but of course they don't. I didn't need the transfer skid plate so I sold it on fleabay for $50.

I ordered mine off ebay a few minutes ago. $206 ($226 or make offer) free shipping from Norman OK.

I guess I wasn't paying attention back in December when they seem to have appeared on the market. They look well made. Wish they were at least .200 being aluminum.

Question: Can the two small steel protection plates (differential) currently under the plastic stay in place under the aluminum skid plates? It doesn't look like they can stay.

I don't know, didn't try to fit mine with them left on there. I am going to say no but I could be wrong.

I'm 99% sure that the 2 steel braces need to be removed before installing the aluminum plates.

yes you remove the steel braces , they are for added strength for the plastic you are removing to install the alum. ones ..... the gm plates are 2 piece plus a tranfer case plate if needed

I added the aluminum skid plates to my 2016 Z71. I made a piece to cover the hole in the bottom plate that doesn't appear to give access to anything.

I think I just found my next purchase! I can't believe they threw a piece of plastic on there, they are already making enough off of us but to cheap out like that, come on.
