Running Rotella T in 6.2L

What's up everyone. A buddy of mine used to run full syn. 15-40 diesel oil in his ls6 and ls1 for the longest time. Never had any issues and actually helped his lifter tic in his ls1. I know there's zinc in it and was wondering if anyone has ran this in their trucks? I've ran it in my 5.0 coyote motor and never had an issue either. Just want to know if there are any horror stories out there running this oil in a 5.3 or 6.2 Thanks in advance for any help

I'm hopping on here, want to know the same. Its an excellent oil would love to run T6 5W40, but I would NOT run the dino 15W40 in it.

The zinc in its additive will not be good for your catalytic convertor.

 

Zddp is not a problem for diesels. It will drastically shorten the life of a modern cat however.

Seems way too heavy a weight. The LS1 isn't comparable to the Gen V with VVT, AFM and all the other oil-driven things.

I wouldn't put it into one of these newer motors. Now I had a buddy who would run it in his mid 90's Ford Ranger without issue, but that's a different story.

I totally agree with this statement. The heaviest weight I would run in an LS based engine (warm climate) is 10W30.

I ran 15w-40 on a built LSA...but still very different from these motors.

 

I would just ask your tuner their recommendation. Otherwise run what GM does.

Gm specs 15w50 in the LT1 Vettes for track use and then 5w30 in day to day. This is regardless if the Corvette has a wet sump oil system or not... and the LT1 and L86 are identical long blocks. Most guys making the switch to 15w50 just leave it... and service departments aren't having a bird about it nor are the engines grenading. Run whatever makes you feel good... I use 5w30 in my L86 as opposed to the bath water 0w20 they spec. It's funny because the next step will be guys yapping off about tight tolerances or clearances nonsense... these same guys also couldn't decipher the difference between a crankshaft and a camshaft. I will add though for the warranty fairies that also freak out about this the next time my truck will see a dealership is when I trade it... so I don't care lol. I only add these remarks now as this happens every single time a thread regarding oil viscosity pops up.

I was running 20w50 in my LT1 94 Camaro, I live in a warm climate where the temperature rarely dips to 32F.

As opposed to zinc, moly is a great additive in oils. Some brands have very good levels of moly in their oil. Schaeffer, the brand I use, has boatloads of moly in it. 309 ppm, which is 4-5 times what other oils I have looked at have. And it has more antimony than any other oil I have seen data on... 69 ppm. Antimony is highly resistant to acids developed in combustion and a great extreme pressure modifier, which is the main function of zinc also. The moly/antimony combo does not have the negative effects on emissions stuff that high levels of zinc can. I would never run a 40w oil in one of the pickups unless it was on it's last leg. 30w is more than sufficient. Heck, I use a 10w30 in my commercial class 8 truck diesel engine.
