I have a son who has a 2014 Silverado LTZ. He bought it brand new last year. He says the leather seats are turning colors. Here is a few pics. Dealer tells him its normal wear and tear. What do you think?

Yep, cheap leather. Sounds silly, but try not to "slide" in and out of the truck. That just wears the cheap seats out quicker.

No.....It's the result of cheap leather "paint" coating not immune to dye transfer combined with wearing jeans/clothes manufactured using dyes that are not color-fast.

Learned my lesson with gold and grey leathers in Chryslers, grey in Hondas (the worst) , and grey in Chevys .....the perforated seats being the worse because the hole areas darkened more on the driver's than the less frequently used passenger seat. All of them transferred the colored dyes (especially blue) from jeans and other denim clothing....worse when new and/or wet! My jeans always had to go through a few wash cycles first and I always cleaned/ waxed the seats once a week (the cleaning rags used actually developed a blue tint), but even then it was a losing battle.

Now I always buy black, the 3 year old black leather in my Avalanche looked new when traded and my Silverado, Traverse and Malibu all have black leather....even got black in the Camaro though it has cloth. The dye may still transfer from the denim but no one will see it.........may not look as good as my previous grey and gold two tone interiors and may heat up more in the Summer, but at least the black leather will continue to look black.

That looks like the topcoating wearing off on the edges, not dye transfer.

Just look a vehicle where the driver wears Carhart jackets. That material is like sandpaper.

That is super premature! There is no way leather should be wearing like that within the first 10 years!

Slight blue transfer noted on both sided of the vertical bead. Wear can also occur by scrubbing the crap out of it to remove staining if you let it buildup.. . Most of the time I wore jeans, top and bottom, doing work with the truck and a monthly coat of Armour-All didn't hurt either to help you slide out.

It's only painted leather, not tanned cowhide......Simple solution: my truck, my rules:

Rule #1 Check rear pockets and remove any sharp objects before you seat.

Rule #2 If you have studs your jeans or coats - you either take it off, sit on a blanket or you can walk.

Rule #3 If you have dirty or abrasive clothing - see rule #2

My "cheap" Chevy grey leather on my '07 lasted 4 years and still looked great without a single wear spot (only slight blue staining) when traded.

I cannot tell from those pictures, but I had a similar problem in my 2015. I found out the issue was my wife and son lathered up in heavy sunscreen (gotta be careful out in this florida sun) and the sunscreen was making the black leather look weird. I took to it with some cleaner and conditioner and it was back to new

All light-colored leather will have this happen (dye transfer). It's definitely worse if you wears jeans a lot (the dye in jean material leeches out quicker). It should come off easily with some leather cleaner. Remember to also put leather conditioner on after you clean it (the cleaner removes moisture from the leather and can cause it to crack sooner). There are lots of good brands out there like Zymol, Mothers, and Lexol.

My 14 has pretty much similar wear going on. I own an auto repair shop and my uniforms are pretty abrasive matereal I also generally wear jeans. My truck has 17k on it now and I noticed the wear right about 12k. Seems premature to me as it just looks like the leather is topcoated rather than dyed all the way though. I plan to dye the spots before I turn the lease in just to be safe.

Unfortunately, even though these seats are "leather", they are really mostly nicer vinyl. The only part of the seats that are leather are the perforated part. Thats not dye transfer, it looks like whatever pants you are wearing is rubbing on the piping and the vinyl panels and wearing them out. The best way to protect them is to ensure that you keep them coated with a leather/vinyl conditioner to keep the abrasion of your clothes to a minimum, or go to an auto upholsterer and get some nicer leather like katskinz installed or put on some seat covers.

Yeah sunscreen does some real damage to plastics, especially clear plastics and interior material. Last year, i sprayed down in sunscreen and got in my truck. I normally rest my right arm on the center console, well the plastic tray got completely discolored and ruined. I had to replace it. Also those nalgene bottles don't do well with sunscreen hands and get an ugly haze on them. No more sunscreenkng down before getting in the truck, we do it when we get to where we are going.

I'm reviving this old post because it shows exactly what my (dune/tan) seats are looking like.  I was trying to find a fix for the worn color areas but haven't come up with anything.  Has anyone tried some leather dye, applied just to the worn areas.  I was thinking of trying some light tan dye applied with a Q-tip or small/model  paint brush ???
