New member - powder coated rims and 5.3 AFM question

FIL bought new in '10 but passed in '14 so we purchased from the siblings. Rims were getting pretty rough so we recently powder coated them and Fusion-ed the center caps. Why does the auto industry continue with aluminum rims? I'd like factory steel since it can at least be sanded and painted:

Got it with 72,000+ miles and are 90,000+ miles and no oil issues yet - would it have happened by now?

Welcome. Rims look great!

The entire wheel looks great, not just the rim. It would be silly to have just had the rims repaired when the entire wheel looked that rough. They look like brand new wheels, and the black center cap is a nice touch.

Thank you for the welcomes and compliments. Total for rims was $340ish plus $60 for the local shop to remove and reinstall the rubber and put new weights on the inside. Stripped the caps with Kleanstrip and sanded down the "acne" before painting. Fusion was satin black left over from some other project. I've had great luck with it for other rims and high heat firearms parts so we'll see how they hold up - I figured it was worth a try before dropping $150+ for just new OEM caps.

Any opinions on the oil issue?

The oil was just changed after close to 6,000 miles. After the first 3,000 my monitor indicated 69% so I figured I'd keep going since it still looked good. When changed the monitor was at 41% and the oil still looked good. Dipstick showed 1/2 quart low. Is it possible we've dodged the common oil burning issue bullet?

Thanks again.
