Dealer Installed OEM Cab Roof Marker Lights. Question?

Recommended Posts

Hey guys. I bought my new 2500HD Sierra last week and I really like the look and function of the cab roof lights. I would like to go with the factory oem style lights. I asked my dealer about the lights this week and installing them for me. I do a lot of projects myself but drilling in the roof of my truck is no something I'm very confident with. The price the dealership gave me for the factory GM roof lights with wiring harness was around $250. Then they priced the install at $400 bringing the grand total to $650. That seems very high to me. I would think this would be a 2-3 hr job for someone that has experience.

I have searched and found a few older posts on forums where the guys were saying they paid around $250 for dealers to install these lights in the past. Is my dealer trying to screw me? What is a fair price to pay or has anyone had this job done at their dealership lately that can comment?

Thanks.

Not sure on pricing, but the 2015+ trucks require square holes for the factory cabs lights vs round holes in the older trucks.

Could that be the difference in pricing you are seeing?

Also, does your truck have a sunroof? Read on some forums dealers don't want to mess with adding cab lights to trucks with sunroofs.

Final got a better price from my dealer. Instead of buying the roof lights and wiring harness from the dealer, I bought them through GM Direct. This saved me $140. My dealership got back with me today and has agreed to install these lights for $200. I feel that is reasonable. I'm having these installed next week.

They are designed for clearance markers, you can see if you are too close to hitting or illuminate an unseen or unmarked anything that you might hit. I did it for looks, it finishes the front and mirror LEDs.

I think you are confused... These are on roof of the cab. And are only for extra visibility.

And yes.. They are a $55 option, it's ridiculous what things cost if you don't get it installed from factory.

I was, I looked it up and found a good explanation

Clearance lights are required on a vehicle if it is 8' wide. The DRW trucks must have them on the cab AND also on the rear of the vehicle because their alxe width is 8' wide.

Before they became a vehicle option on pickup trucks, trailer manufacturers put them on both the front and rear corners of trailers, some even put the gang-3 on the front but all had them on the rear.

More often than not, a 1-ton SRW pickup will come with them on the cab because is is 'assumed' that someone buying a 1-ton truck tows trailers that are 8' wide. Many trailer manufacturers stopped putting the gang-3 lights on the front of their trailers, cost-cutting manufacturing overhead, because the 1-ton trucks had the clearance lights up front. The law stipulates that the lights must be on the front and rear of vehicles/trailers 9' wide. So, the clearance lights on the cab and the clearance lights kind of accomodated the 8' wide package from front to rear of the combined vehicle/trailer. Jim Lane is correct - the 3 inside are ICC and the two outside are designated clearance. If you tow an 8' wide trailer that does not have front clearance lights, either install them on your trailer or install the two outside on your truck's cab. Then you will be legal according to DOT law.

I just chose to have them as stock equip on my truck that way I would not have to worry about the DOT no matter what combo of trailer I might be hauling and how it may/may not be lighted properly. The more you have in compliance the less you risk getting harassed.

What dealership and where are you located? Been searching far and wide for a dealer to install these on my 2016 hd and everyone of them in ny have said no

A lot of dealerships are refusing to install them afterward because of the high likelihood of leaks from the lights when they are installed after the fact. My dealership gets every HD they order for stock in with the marker lights because so many people ask about getting them after the fact and they don't want to do it.

Dealer told me they wouldnt install them on my 1500 because of the square holes. They said the holes are punched out at the plant and to install them after would be hard cause the square has to be perfect or you will have a leak. They said they would install the clearance lights that come on the 07-13 cause they dont require the square holes. I had them installed and unless get up close and look at them you cant tell the difference.

I'll take pictures of them on my truck after it stops raining. Here are a few pictures i found online the top set is the 2014 and up style clearnace lights. The bottom set is the 07-13 style. You can see on 2014 and up the square would have to be perfect so those things sticking out on the bottom of the light can tighten against the roof. To big of a hole and it wont work.
