K & N FIPK

Recommended Posts

Well I went ahead and installed the K & N FIPK on the 5.3 last night. Here is what I think.

It sounds really nice, starting around 2000 rpm and when you jump on it, it sounds excellent, very throaty. I did how ever notice a little quicker throttle responce time (which my be my imagination) but as for the seat of your pants horsepower - I have to say not there. According to the papers that came with it, the horse power does not start until 5200 rpm which was a little contradicting from the K&N website which I think said it started around 3000 rpm.

Fuel economy - yeah I noticed the gas guage moving - mainly because I was jumping on it to hear that throaty sound. :fume:

Installation was fairly easy.

I think they are way overpriced for minimal gain in HP, if any, in everyday driving. I remember when we used to invert the air cleaner covers on our carburetor fueled cars to get more air in and the only thing I think we got was the throaty sound, but that didn't cost a cent! If it makes you feel good go for it!

I thought the same. Not impressed w/ low end gains, but I got what I expected in terms of higher rpm gains.

At the time, i got worse gas mileage also due to hitting higher rpms to hear the k&n kick in, but now w/ my super swampers, i can't hear the k&n over the hum of the tires.

So if I decided to get a K&N FIPG Gen II, what would it do for me?

10 more HP?

Different Sounding engine?

Better Fuel Economy?

I have been thinking about buying one, but I want to know what it is going to do for me first.

I think up to 7hp at top rpm...not that much really. Should do better with a catback and especially headers and free flowing cat along with bigger throttle body and MAS. But alone, it should help the gas mileage a little as long as your not putting your foot into it to hear it sucking more.

It will do all of the above, but I never dynoed mine so I don't know about the 10Hp. It is louder when you step on the gas and RPMs shoot above 2K. In terms of gas mileage, I think it gives slight improvements over stock, but that's ONLY if you can keep from getting a heavy right foot to hear the K&N kick in ;)

I noticed a big gain in gas on the highway for me. When we moved from Alaska to Virginia I was getting just over 20 MPH. I have a FIPK and Flowmasters installed. City driving for me is about 16 mph, depending on how I drive.

Well the information that came in the box showed very minimal gains in horse power. I think the paper showed a max hp of 7 at 5600 rpm? I have it at the house if anyone is interested. When looking at the performance curves from stock to K&N they are very close.

As everyone else has been saying, the sound is really cool and you tend to pound it a little to hear the throaty sound. (It's a Tim Allen thing!)

I have not noticed a real gas mileage drop except kicking it up to see what this thing does. I find that it does to get you from 40 to 80 faster and it seems like a little better throttle responce.

Check e-bay for them. I've seen them range from $175 to $250 for them. Most shops in my area wants like $280. The stealer is at $360-380. (MARKUP city there)

My wife and I watch a lot of the car shows(Horsepower TV, Trucks, Two Guys etc.), and she has figured that you pay about $50-60/hp based on the TV dynos and cost estimates. But I keep telling her that it's not the money or the power it's the joy of ownership and working on your truck that counts and as Master Charge says that is priceless. After about $3000 worth improvements (not counting wheels and tires which she seems to understand) I almost have her believing it. There is no substitute for an understanding woman. They are truly priceless.
