rear axel leak

Recommended Posts

I've got a 2017 1500 Z71 4X4. I've been smelling a faint smell of gear oil from the left rear tire. I went under the truck and both the left and rear wheels seem to have oil leaking from the hubs. There is no smell on the liquid that's accumulated/grease accumulated. I'd expect gear oil to really be both greasy/viscous and smell. So i'm wondering if it's brake fluid, gear oil, or is it the animals that live outside marking the truck. I was just at Chevy for the first oil change/tire rotation/inspection and they said nothing.

Thoughts?

At 16k miles I had my right rear axle seal go out. Gear oil all over the inside of the rim. They fixed it, but there has always been returning 'seeping' leak from that seal even after the repair. Search for my original post. You need to take it back in to get this fixed immediately before your brake pads are contaminated.
