Diagnose Engine Noise

Recommended Posts

if you do spray B12 down there, make sure to change the oil right after....you don't want that stuff floating around in the crankcase. Before I swapped heads and did new cam/lifters, I had a slight tick...MMO in the crankcase would get rid of it. Might be worth a try for you

Yea, I'm on an MMO regimen for oil and gas. Truck is completely quiet and slowly cleaning things up. Other than a slight tick I had at idle. It would tick with RPMs when I would get up in the 1500-2000 range. Since I've started it in the oil, that's gone away. Definitely seems quiet now

guys I figured it out...

seriously. I tried mmo in oil, seafoam in oil, seafoam in gas, seafoam in intake, mmo in gas, and premium gas.

i was listening to the enginw with a long screwdriver and heard a funky noise coming from a coil pack on one of the cylinders. pulled the plug and realized it was loose spark plug.

found this video online for a similar noise:

Watch "Engine ticking noise Ford Escort 2.0L loose spark plug" on YouTube

when I checked the plug it had some weird burning on it but I screwed it back in and tick is GONE. guys check this before you go start doing everything else!!!

it's only been one day but I think it's gone!

The 6.0 in my 03 has always been a bit clickity clacky as well, and I also suspect it's the injectors making the noise. As others have said here, these engines are a bit noisy. I'll also agree with the others here, I don't think it's lifters or you'd really hear it, especially on cold start up. If it is lifters another trick is dump in a quart or two of kerosene before you change the oil, let it idle for a few minutes and then change the oil, the kerosene serves the same purpose, flushes the engine. Did that on my 98 Yukon that had pretty bad lifter click on cold start up, cured it 100%.
